    PawSox Moving to Providence

Sad news. I think a trip to McCoy is in order this summer.

Didn't Pawtucket just renew their contract? I've really enjoyed going to that park over the years, too bad they're moving to Providence.

Providence has never figured out what to do with that waterfront. Luckily for Pawtucket, it'll take years of working woth the corrupt RI government to get anything done.

I don't want to put words in your mouth, but quite possiby they will remain in Pawtucket after a couple of years of dealing with every crooked politician and pain in the ass special interest group.

Palms will be greased. The RI government is embarassing. At least they didn't reelect Buddy this year.

Privately funded doesn't mean they'll be able to throw up a new stadium wherever they please. RI is tremendously slow to do anything of value.

I wonder how strong the deal with the City of Pawtucket is? Can they move before 2021 without owing a bunch in penalties?

And why move them 10 miles south to Providence?

McCoy is a nice venue and is adequate in every way.

    Dumb.

Apparently it's not very strong. I see value in having it in a different location, I just doubt there will be a big enough jump in attendance to make a move financially viable.

I agree. I see no reason to abandon McCoy.

It's not like there is money to be made by having luxury boxes.

Moving the team would make me hate LL even more.

    Is that so?

Aren't the Sox just minority owners of the Pawsox?

I wonder what influence the Sox have on this.

Clearly it's money and stadium - PawSox don't own McCoy - they'd own the new place, I think it's probably that simple.

Well, the Sox (aside from Lucchino) do not own the team, they do have an agreement with them to provide players. I am sure those agreements include some standard share of stuff. If the Sox had a big issue, they could easily switch to another franchise when the affiliation agreement ends.

That said, I think this move is just the new owners wanting to make the franchise more valuable by owning the stadium and all related revenue.

LL put his own money down (approx $2M).

There is money to be made in minor league baseball both for the city and the club. McCoy is an outdated facility. A new minor league park on or near the waterfront can be a huge draw for the city. I ve been to or seen about a dozen minor league parks. With a state of the art park like those new ones around and located just off I-95, there is no doubt in my mind that a Rhode Island Red Sox triple A team could be setting minor league attendance records.
