I said from the start, our pen is the weakest link ("not weak but weakest").

Now it looks worse than I expected.

Beautiful. Will we ever see Smith or Thornburg throw a pitch for us?

Last year Kelly missed a month and Tazaw 18 days with the same injury. Sucks but will be back.

Smith has 4 years of team control, so I'd say yes to him.

Thornburg has 3 years remaining. I say yes here too.

Who knows if we will see them much this year, but we should.

    MLBTR...

Thornburg has a shoulder impingement, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe. Thornburg won’t throw for another 10 days, and Abraham notes that this injury could sideline him for a month (Twitter link).

Yes he does deserve our thanks.

Anyone put off or offended by his post is thinking on a juvenile level.

Everything he said is true. DD's big moves to shore-up the pen have gone up in flames.

"It's also a simple and indisputable fact that WAR isn't the be-all end-all in valuations, especially in real life. Wanna know why? Because an ace in run-prevention for 120 innings means more often than not, a sub-standard pitcher covering for the rest of the IP that pitcher fails to provide. You can't see value in a vacuum when a player does not provide full-time production."

i must be juvenile then, oh well. Thornburg will be out for about a month and Smith should be back in June, they have control over both pitchers for years, would not call that going up in flames.

True, but in the shorter term things do look rickety. Better hope Kelly, Barnes, Hembree, etc. can step up to compensate somewhat.

I think they can hold the fort for a month, they all have above average stuff. Farrell has to manage them correctly.

Like the Sale trade, I was never a big fan of this trade, but after seeing Pablo this spring, I understand the reasoning behind giving up Shaw for Thornburg. This sucks, because the offense will almost certainly not be as good as last year, so we can't win those 11-10 ball games any more.
