Baseball Smarts: JF vs David Ortiz

There is no contest here. JF takes the mike and gives an English lesson. David Ortiz walks into the clubhouse and gets mauled with hugs, smiles and chatter.

I can just imagine what it would be like if it were “Manager Ortiz!” Mookie would not be hitting ,260. (he wouldn’t be 0-1 every at bat either). A few chats with Bogie, and he would not be going 0 for whatever in this playoff series.

Durocher had baseball snarts. Casey Stemgel had baseball smarts, Joe McCarthy and Grankie Frisch had baseball smarts. I am equally certain that David Ortiz has as much “baseball smarts’ as any of them,

David for batting coach, not manager. I would not wish the job of Red Sox manager on him. He is a beloved legend in Boston, let's leave it that way. Managers mostly take abuse.

This is exactly why Ortiz would not succeed as a Red Sox manager at this time. He played with many of the players; they are still going to see him as Big Papi. A managers role is different than head cheerleader.

Bellhorn summed it up; the only thing that could happen is his legacy being tarnished. Very few managers get to go out on their own terms. The ones that do have managed a very long time and been fired a few times along the way.
The Yankees could go 0-162 and it wouldn't be enough

Alex Cora for manager if Farrell leaves ... managerial experience, player personnel experience, knows the market and has a terrific reputation in the league

I'm still thinking that DeMarlo Hale would make a pretty solid manager, and wouldn't mind bringing him back.
If history tells us anything, the path to redeption for any bad baseball team is marked with a deep rotation of durable starters, a world class defense in both infield and outfield, a lineup that can generate runs in more than one way, a bullpen that won't steal defeat from the jaws of victory, and a top end catcher to hold the whole package together. These are the conditions by which victory is achieved, anything that does not accomplish these objectives is a waste of resources.

Cora is at the top of my list too.
Fire Farrell - fucking check mark!
    Trade Pedroia
Sign JD Martinez to play 1B/DH
Sign Alex Cora for MGR - check plus!

I don't see Ortiz as a manager. Wrong personality. As someone just said, hitting coach might be more his line.
    Priorities:
    1. Yankees lose
    2. Red Sox win

I see the sox going completely away from any former sox players or coaches. New direction
    The rebuild is complete.

Certainly possible. But I like guys who know the market - or similarly insane markets. I'd certainly pick this over exhuming Jim Leyland or John Boles etc etc

Also has done TV, which is very helpful given how important managing media is in this town.

Cora is just about universally admired in Boston and all the players love him.

Other than no MLB managing experience there is no downside to hiring him.

I also like the way he is articulate in two languages. That can't hurt.

"It's also a simple and indisputable fact that WAR isn't the be-all end-all in valuations, especially in real life. Wanna know why? Because an ace in run-prevention for 120 innings means more often than not, a sub-standard pitcher covering for the rest of the IP that pitcher fails to provide. You can't see value in a vacuum when a player does not provide full-time production."

Cora is the bench coach for a young, powerhouse org, Houston.
Why would he want this job?
