Red Sox look to void Michel Abreu deal

Turns out hes 30 years old:

Boston Red Sox: Three weeks ago, the Red Sox signed first baseman Michel Abreu to a $425,000 contract. Friday, the club began the process of voiding the deal.

The principle reason is that the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Abreu, a Cuban refugee, could not establish residency and therefore would not be eligible to play in 2006.

Another reason is that Abreu represented himself as being 26 years old. However, the roster from the 1999 Orioles-Cuba national team game lists Abreu's birth date as Feb. 8, 1975. The Red Sox found that to be the legitimate date, and Abreu mispresenting his age made the contract voidable.

honestly though, if the Sox actually beieved that he was 26 then they're at fault. You've got to be pretty stupid to think that Cubans are really the age they claim to be.

I would bet that they knew his age and didn't care. But when he wasn't able to get residency to play next year, then they used the age issue as an out of the contract.

    Wow, that's a stupid comment.

The Yankees did the exact same thing with a guy named Andy Morales. They signed him to a 4.5 million dollar bonus, and invalidated it because he lied about his age.

But, that's ok, because it was the Yankees right?

    Don't worry about that.

Anyone who calls you a racist on this site, is probably a moron anyway.

I think by "ones" you mean one. I merely said it sounded it, didn't call you it. That was Riverside by the way.

Nice call on the Cuban Defectors, by the way.

Yes, I was mostly referring to Riverside Sluggers, I just didn't want the poor kid to feel singled out.
