New scouting hires and assignments by the Sox

From today's Globe...[I don't have enough posts to be permitted to link this.]

Scaffolds, what do you think of the international hires and assignments?

"In the organization’s International Baseball Operation, Eddie Romero has been promoted to the position of Coordinator, Latin America Operations. Romero joined the Red Sox last winter as Assistant, Professional and International Scouting.

Boston has hired Jose Zapata as the new manager of its Dominican Summer League team. Zapata has been with the Florida Marlins since 2002, serving as the organization’s Dominican Summer League manager the last four seasons. He previously was with the Montreal Expos organization. Nelson Paulino, who has managed Boston’s DSL team for four years, will serve as the bench coach for the team.

The Red Sox also hired Ricardo Petit to scout in Venezuela."

Re: New scouting hires and assignments by the Sox

The Sox announced a few new area scouts:

Duane Gustavson: Appointed area scout for the Ohio Valley Region (Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee). Gustavson has spent the last ten years as an amateur scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates, most recently in the Ohio Valley area.

Laz Gutierrez: Appointed area scout in South Florida. Gutierrez served as pitching coach at Barry University in Miami Shores, FL in 2006 after three years as head baseball coach at Coral Gables, FL High School. He pitched at the University of Miami and in the Detroit and San Diego organizations.

Tony Guzzo: Appointed area scout for the Mid-Atlantic Region (Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia). Guzzo has won over 700 games in 26 years as a collegiate head coach, compiling a 303-252 record at Old Dominion University from 1995-2004. Detroit Tigers rookie standout Justin Verlander pitched for Guzzo before being selected second overall in the 2004 draft.

In addition, Josh Loggins, who joined the Red Sox as a part-time scout this past season, has been promoted as the club’s area scout in the Midwest Region (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin). Loggins spent eight seasons as an outfielder with the Padres, Yankees, and Indians organizations.

Edgar Perez joins the organization in Puerto Rico after seven years with the Cleveland Indians. He has been a coach in the Puerto Rican League the last several winters, working at Arecibo this year.

Quincy Boyd, a native of South Carolina, becomes Boston’s area scout for North and South Carolina after spending 2006 working in the Midwest Region. Jon Lukens, who has scouted South Florida for the last several years, moves back to the Western United States as the area scout for Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.

In the organization’s International Baseball Operation, Eddie Romero has been promoted to the position of Coordinator, Latin America Operations.

The Red Sox also hired Ricardo Petit to scout in Venezuela.

AZBlue; The signing of Petit and Zapata are good moves, Petit is an excellent evaluator with a lot of contacts in Venezuela a very well known name in that area. Zapata is a good baseball man. I am some what surprised that they have move Paulino to a bench coach position instead of having a second team in the DSL. Eddie Romero becomes the coordinator of what? What area?

In addition the signing of Lazaro Gutierrez is also a very good move, has a very good knowledge of pitching and a very respected name is South Florida, however with this moves is Jeff Zona and Danny Haas still in the organization?

To clear the air, the Braves scout in Venezuela is Rolando Petit, not Ricardo who just signed with the Sox, don't know if they are related.

The Petit that i was refering in the post above was Rolando Petit and not Ricardo. I am not very familiar with Ricardo petit.

Jaymie Bane is Eddie Bane's son. He and his dad put on a pitching clinic for my Little League team. Jaymie can pitch with either hand. He is a very nice young man.

To answer my own question a few postings above, scout Jeff Zona has signed with the Washington Nationals. Zona who has scouted for the Sox the last few years scouted and recomended Sox's 2006 second first round pick RHP Daniel Bard.

After checking with difference sources Rolando Petit still remains in the Braves organization, so the question of Rolando and Ricardo Petit being the same person, the answer is they aren't the same person. I haven't been able to get any information on Ricardo.

Any word on why the Red Sox and Zona parted company? Zona has had a lot of high draft picks.

Boston also has hired four new staffers for the professional scouting department. Jaymie Bane joins the Red Sox from the Chicago White Sox, where he served as an area scout in Northern and Central Florida. Keith Champion comes to the Red Sox after 12 years with the Chicago Cubs, the last seven as special assistant to the general manager. Dave Klipstein comes on board from the Texas Rangers, where he served as central crosschecker in the amateur scouting department. Jesse Levis joins the Red Sox from the Milwaukee Brewers, where he served as an area scout in New England and the Mid-Atlantic Region.

With the restructuring of the Red Sox professional scouting department, returning scouts Galen Carr, David Howard, Gus Quattlebaum and Jerry Stephenson will concentrate on Major League coverage. In addition, Matt Mahoney, who spent 2006 as Boston's scouting and player development intern, has been hired as assistant professional scouting.

    Keith Champion
    Dave Klipstein

Rolando Petit recently signed heralded Nicaraguan pitcher Danilo Alvarez to Altlanta braves contract. another prove that Petit remains with the Braves. The Sox where also in the hunt for Alvarez before he signed with the Braves.
