Brewers signed outfielder Gabe Kapler to a one-year contract.
It's very surprising to see Kapler, who announced his intention to resume his playing career back in September, get a major league deal after sitting out a year and managing in the minors. The 32-year-old hit .254/.340/.354 in 130 at-bats for the Red Sox in 2006. If the Brewers pick up a left-handed-hitting outfielder to start in left or center -- rumor has them interested in Kenny Lofton -- Kapler would be an option as a platoon partner. Still, there were better choices available. His addition would seem to mean Tony Gwynn Jr. will return to the minors if not traded.
