50 killed in Gay Florida Nightclub by ISIS member

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/12/us/orl...club-shooting/
An American-born man who'd pledged allegiance to ISIS gunned down 50 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando -- the deadliest mass shooting in the United States and the nation's worst terror attack since 911, authorities said Sunday.
    * The gunman was Omar Mateen of Fort Pierce, Florida, a law enforcement source told CNN.
    * Mateen called 911 around the time of the attack to pledge allegiance to ISIS and mentioned the Boston bombers, according to a U.S. official.
    * Orlando police shot and killed Mateen.
Mateen carried an assault rifle and a pistol into the packed Pulse club about 2 a.m. Friday and started shooting, killing 50 people and wounding at least 53, police said. After a standoff of about three hours, police crashed into the building with an armored vehicle and killed Mateen.
"It appears he was organized and well-prepared," Orlando Police Chief John Mina said early Sunday. Authorities have not described finding any accomplices.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack on jihadi forums, but ISIS sympathizers have reacted by praising the attack on pro-Islamic State forums.
"We know enough to say this was an act of terror and act of hate," President Obama said in an address to the nation from the White House.
While the violence could have hit any American community, "this is an especially heartbreaking day for our friends who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender," he said.

Stuff like this is getting old. FUCK ISIS.

We can express our sympathy for the victims of this crime here without turning this into a gun control debate that will only end poorly with a locked thread and festering dislike. Please do not turn this into an 'issues' thread. Keep this on the topic of the shooting itself.

It's my understanding the shooting was with a gun.
How is that not on topic?

Sad. Very sad. This country should be in mourning, not launching into political blame games. Evry political opinion I saw on Twitter yesterday was impossibly tone deaf.

So political discussion is frowned upon here, even in the "Off Topic" section? Not criticizing at all, just making sure I understand the rules. Seems nigh impossible to discuss this event without it veering into discussion about guns/terrorism/the election/etc.

Historically, political discussion has turned into flame wars/crap fests a significant percentage of the time, so it's frowned upon to a certain extent. I believe this event warrants some leeway for discussion on gun control in my opinion though.
    We miss you Mike.

Got it...I think. I'll try to err on the safe side.

Why not simply heed Youks request?

    This is very sad.

Because an ace in run-prevention for 120 innings means more often than not, a sub-standard pitcher covering for the rest of the IP that pitcher fails to provide. You can't see value in a vacuum when a player does not provide full-time production."

If I thought for a second that the discussion would remain civil, I would be perfectly fine with it, but somehow I doubt it would.

Fair point. I won't bring it up again.

If there are any TS members in the Orlando area, the medical authorities are making a plea for blood donations. In fact, the Florida CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) is calling on all of their members to donate blood if possible.

It's always great when you see everyone in a community pulling together in the face of something like this, but it sucks that it happens in the first place and gives them the need. It also sucks that this incident is certainly going to become a political issue (outside of TalkSox, anyways ) over the next few days and be analyzed to oblivion, forcing so many of the victims, their families, and others to relive the tragedy as it plays out on the 24-hour news cycle.

I always feel so helpless at stuff like this. There is nothing I can do from here to affect anything in any way, and that just makes me feel like crap.

I didn't think I wasn't...was just asking for clarification. If politics, etc. is a no-go here, that's all I need to know.

    This is very sad.
Indeed. And I'm sure most of us have someone or a few someones close to us who are hit particularly hard by this. Devastating day all around.

What a fucked up world we live in, is all I can say.

Give blood. Tell your family you love them. Make a difference in your community by volunteering, donating or just being a nicer person. Not sure what else us regular joes can do.

I was commenting on slav's post.

If a mod states a policy just follow it. Why question or debate it? Asking for clarification of an easy request to understand is unnecessary. Yet at almost every opportunity the new members do this.
