as ive watched in the past, i dont think having lowe in the pen is an awful idea come post-season. i can remember that lowe has had some key moments in the post-season, including the wrap-up of game 5 of the alds last year in oakland, and pitched well in game 3 this year. thoughts?

sarasoxfan
10-10-2004, 08:52 AM
I think having lowe anywhere gives me hives. I almost threw up the other night...The pen is just dandy without him, the only thing that it means as fas as I can see it, is now Francona has more options to make stupid moves. As usual though our team is so damn good it doesnt matter that we have the worst manager.
I dont think derek has a place in the scheme of things anymore. Maybe as a long relief guy, but he is too much of mental patient to serve any important role...

He helped no question but beware!

Not true. You say what happened to our pen in game 3 of the alds. They essentially blew the game. Lowe came on and got 3 strikeouts in 1.2 innings and pitched decently. The playoffs are a whole other ballgame from the regular season. I would not be surprised to see Lowe continue to pitch and continue to pitch well.

Francona won't dare to put Myers against a righty, will he? That was the dumbest move I've seen.

Tessie is the Royal Rooters rally cry
Tessie is the song they always sung
Tessie echoed April through October nights
After serenading Stahl, Dineen and Young
Tessie is a maiden with the sparkling eyes
Tessie is a maiden with the love
She doesn't know the meaning of her sight
She's got a comment full of love
And sometimes when the game is on the line
Tessie always carried them away
Up the road from Third Base to Huntington
The boys will always sing and sway

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, Nuff Ced McGreevy shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only, only, only

The Rooters showed up at the Grounds one day
They found their seats had all been sold
McGreevy led the charge into the park
Stormed the gates and put the game on hold
The Rooters gave the other team a dreadful fright
Boston's tenth man could not be wrong
Up from Third Base to Huntington
They sang another victory song

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, Nuff Ced McGreevy shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only, only, only

The Rooters gave the other team a dreadful fright
Boston's tenth man could not be wrong
Up from Third Base to Huntington
They sang another victory song

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, Nuff Ced McGreevy shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Boston, you are the only, only, only
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Red Sox, you are the only, only, only

I will be playing, and singing that, all day long on Tuesday.

My lineup for tomorrow nights game...
J.D. - hitting .240 with 18 hits 1 hr and 9 rbi's
M.B. - hitting .333 with 1 hr
M.R. - hitting .203 with 15 hits 5 hr and 13 rbi's
K.M. - hitting .348 with 8 hits 1 hr and 3 rbi's
D.O. - hitting .069 with 1 rbi
T.N - hitting .193 with 11 hits 1 hr and 4 rbi's
O.C. - hitting .200 with 1 2B
J.V. - hitting .091 with 4 hits
B.M. - hitting .000 with 0 hits

David Ortiz, Jason Varitek, Bill Mueller and Pokey Reese have struggled significantly against Mike Mussina this year. Combined they are batting .058 with 90 AB/39 K/2 RBI/6 H/0 HR. So they will need to turn this around in order to beat Mussina. And they will...

The header bar reads "5 outs better?" And it's a valid point. We were better than the yankees last year and we had them beat. This year we're a better team than last, definitely at LEAST 5 outs better.

I just read where Tek is an incredible 0-for-34 with 19 strikeouts at Yankee Stadium this year and fell from .248 to .196 lifetime at the Bronx. The swoon included an 0-for-10 performance with eight strikeouts during the Sox' last visit to Yankee Stadium Sept. 17-19.

Somehow it would help a lot if he were able to reverse this curse, oops, I mean change that trend.

we need ya today Tek!

I'm looking for Schilling to be great tonight. The hitter that scares me most is Matsui, Schilling has to be careful with him.
I see Francona is leaving Youk out and putting Mendoza in to shore up the bullpen. This could be a key move of the series.
Tek needs to hit better, I mean, hit against the MFY.
Damon getting on base seems to be a key to big innings.
If the Sox are behind late watch for the exciting Dave Roberts to pinch run.
GO SOX!!!

Beaneater

Call me crazy, but I'm not that depressed by this. This whole game was disastrous from the get-go -- Mussina was incandescent, Schilling was clearly not all there, eveything that could have gone wrong did through 6 1/2, and we still got within one swing of tying the game in the 8th and the 9th. (Indeed, in the 8th we got within about 5 feet of tying the game.) They slapped us around like the proverbial red-headed stepchild and we still crawled back in it.

I know, I know, this is the Red Sox we're talking about. They're capable of repeated meltdowns, as 85 years of history tell us. But seriously, is everything going to break the Yankees' way for this whole series? What I saw tonight shows me that in order to beat us, the Yankees need 1) an insane pitching performance and 2) a titanic Red Sox collapse (a la Schilling). That is not going to happen every game.

Afterthought: Did anyone else notice that the strike zone was smaller when the Yankees were batting? Sheffield got 4-5 strikes at least twice, and there were some questionable strikes called against the Sox (questionable enough that even the Fox crew questioned them). I realize that I am hopelessly biased, so I'm calling on some of you hopelessly biased people to confirm or disprove my idea. :)

Not that I'm saying that we would have won with a better strike zone -- only 1 run that I recall was directly attributable to a bad call (Sheffield should have been punched out in the 8th, perfect pitch from Timlin that was somehow not called a strike, and he later came around to score). But it sure made me want to throw things at the TV (since the actual umpire was not within throwing range).

Great job sox offense. Down 8-0 in the 7th and cut it to 1 run! Amazing.

Beaneater
10-12-2004, 11:01 PM
I should have said that 2 runs were attributable to that bad call. Sheffield should have been K'd for the second out, then (assuming that all else remains equal) Matsui pops out for out #3 and Williams does not hit the 2-run double.

Makes no difference in the final analysis though, except that psychologically it would have been different to go into the 9th down 1 instead of 3.

CalvnHobs6
10-12-2004, 11:04 PM
Some good came out of this game.
A) A ridiculous comeback
B ) Shutout innings by Embree, Mendoza, and Leskanic.

I like the way this series looks. Sure, we're down 1-0, but this was just not Schilling's night. Discount the first 3 innings (if only) and the sox won this game 7-4. Ridiculous, but if the Sox can get 7 runs in a game where Moose starts...what about Lieber? I like it.

mosox
10-12-2004, 11:05 PM
Well, Schilling and Damon were just terrible, and without #38 pitching well and without #18 getting on base, it was going to be tough.
The comeback was a good sign but the middle relief was a disaster, except for Embree.
Sox pitchers cannot get behind in counts and expct to get these guys out.
And why, after several years do the Sox fail to see that Matsui is a low ball hitter?
Timlin got him out in the 8th with a high pitch inside, SURPRISE!
Down 1-0 is not horrible, but it's time the Sox get in the game from start to finish.

well we really gave in to them tonight. what a pathetic offensive effort. you allow mussina to throw a perfect game for 6.2 innings and then lieber a 3 hitter through 7....seriously...pathetic. its like buckling up under pressure every time we play this team in their place. its a joke, the entire thing is a joke. and you know very well if some miracle happens and we get back in this series, you know very well who is going to beat us. not A-rod, not Jeter, not Sheffield, BUT CAIRO, OLERUD, KENNY LOFTON, OR NELSON DE LA ROSA...BECAUSE ANYTHING THEY WANT TO DO IN A BIG GAME THEY DO IT--just like aaron boone and bucky dent. this is so painful and hurtful and am extremely let down. i would have taken a split in NY. but when you dont win with either Ace, or beat jon leiber its time to pack them up.
