Jeremy Guthrie (3-9, 4.30 ERA)

This is one we need to win with Lester on the mound against the worst team in baseball.

if our starters keep it up, we'll be just fine. we don't need our full healthy lineup when the starters are going 7-8 innings allowing only a few runs

I'm confident in Lester on this one. Let's see if our offense can make something out of it. If we win and yankees lose(which might not happen score is now 2-8 bottom of the 3rd yankees) we get first place!

Guthrie's a good pitcher-- limited the Sox to only two runs in 7+ last time. He's got good numbers against our entire lineup-- save Ortiz. We should expect a close game.

Is it only me, or does anyone else think that the injuries actually help us in a way? Hold on for a minute, hear me out. It seems to me that one thing this team has lacked in recent years is a real sense of urgency-- letting games come and go with the attitude like, "there's always tomorrow." These guys seem motivated to win and play now and, in a strange way, the injuries have made them a better "team" in the true sense of the word.

I think the biggest thing is the time of the season. Their recent rash of injuries hit at a time when they had a bunch of days off and then get the ASB next week. Plus, playing stiffs like the O's doesnt hurt. They go to TB and Toronto before the break, then get a brutal stretch starting with Texas at home, then a 10 game west coast stretch, then come home to Detroit, a 3 game easy set with Cleveland, then get the Yankees at home. By the time the sox face the yankees, VMart and Beckett should be back, Pedroia and Tek should be rehabbing and Ellsbury could be in either boat.

I've seen this team win some big games on the road-- sweep the Rays-- and then come home and fall flat. I think the injuries keep each day relevant and heightens the importance of the game at hand.

That's one way to look at it. Regardless, they have been playing over their heads for so long that they dont even know they should be doing this

"Over their heads" sounds like a championship year to me. In 2004, we had lots of guys playing "over their heads," putting up career numbers.

Eventually, it will all come crashing down. The question is whether it falls after the season or before the end of the season.

Was that JD hustling into second base? What hustle. Must need a day off now.

not to make a big deal about beating the orioles with lester on the mound, but this team has been special so far. they simply find ways to win regardless of who's in the lineup, who's on the mound or who they're facing. extra bases pointed out how cy young award winning pitchers are 0-4 with a 6.57 era against them

Another win for the Boston Red Sox. It's a great time to be a Red Sox fan.

I think that's not quite right. I think Cy Young pitchers are 1-5, having faced CC three times already this year. Doesn't really matter though. Sox win again and Patterson turned a sweet DP early in this one to put the O's back in their cage.

cy young winning pitchers facing the red sox have a record of 0-4 this year. the red sox as a team have a record of 6-1 in games in which they have faced cy young winning pitchers

the sox have faced sabathia 3 times, zach greinke twice and roy halladay and tim lincecum once each
