It seems like there's a flame war on this forum on a daily basis. I like to joke around, and I'm guilty of jumping in to a couple of these flame wars just for entertainment. But it seem like the level of vitriol and deep dislike people have for each other on this forum has boiled over. I tried to look for some kind of rules, and found this post.

1) Beginning at 6 pm EST tonight any member who instigates a fight/flame war/shouting match will be awarded a 3-5 day ban per my discretion. The ban will be discussed by the mod team and may be amended as needed. Any member who responds to an instigating post, thereby continuing the stupid fight will be awarded a 1 day ban. Anyone who returns from a ban and must be banned again will be banned permanently. If 2 or more users decide to gang up on another poster, feeding off of each other's stupid energy until the entire thread is hijacked and transformed into a worthless pile of crap, those 2+ members will be awarded bans of 7+ days. These bans will be awarded regardless of the length of tenure on the site.

What ever happened to that? It's gotten to the point where it's impossible to have a baseball discussion between two posters without a third poster jumping in calling someone names or "protecting" one of the posters. If you ask them to cut it out and discuss baseball, they call you sensitive or accuse you of being on the other person's side. Could people please cut it out? Or could an admin perhaps step in and at the very least, delete posts that make no mention to baseball and have multiple insults or obscenities?

Real problem is that some posters attack others when somebody think different about a baseball thing since they think that they own the absolutely true. This is a baseball forum and each poster see the game different and it is cool to put/ support your point of view with some stats, experience and all but again sometimes these guys take baseball comments/critics so personal. Look what happened today. I said that I would like to see Nava playing everyday since I think Gomes sucks and the guy began with personal attacks.

I agree with SR. This is getting out of hand. I'm starting to post less and less in game threads. I understand that humans will have their own opinions and even disagree, but there is no reason to forget the whole reason why we're here to prove a point to somebody by beating the shit out of them by flaming.

Yeah, if things continue like this I'm eventually going to stop posting. We're in first place and there's a flame war in pretty much every game thread.

Someone said "I'm glad you're not manager" or "Thank god you're not manager" or something along those lines and it started a 3-4 page flame war between members that were in no way involved in the discussion in the first place. That's insanity.

"I'm glad you don't run the Red Sox". How that can turn into a flame war is beyond me. Part of it is the victim act some love to present.

After the flame war started, some of us tried to get back into baseball discussion, and the same guy who's here whining about that silly comment wouldn't let up with the flamethrower.

I haven't posted that much in game threads lately, but I always have said that a game thread is like you are in a bar with your friends drinking a beer and sometimes you are reactionary, making jokes, etc. but again... Some posters do not tolerate that you say something against the team even when they suck.

We have to relax and enjoy the game trying to be tolerant.

Maybe if you stopped taking everything everyone who you don't like says as a slight, some of these shitstorms should be avoided.

If i say "i'm glad you're not the GM of the Sox" i am not calling you an idiot. I am literally saying i don't agree with a baseball opinion you just said. If i want to call you an idiot, i will say "you are an idiot".

Yeah yeah, my bad. I'm actually trying to extend an olive branch here and that came out wrong. I will respectfully bow out.

I think that we know who the majority of the participants are and that we should tell them the specific posters they need to put on their ignore list so they are forced to use it.

The ignore list isn't great, but it's a good start. Some people aren't going to get along, and they will probably hold those grudges against one another and bring up the past time after time. At this point it's clearly not going to be resolved so both parties (in each example) need to do their best to ignore one another and move on. The site is obviously big enough for us.

But the ignore list has been brought up millions of times and some people claim to use it, but...

The problem is the ignore lists' weakness to the quote feature. I'm using it, but i can still see when someone says something about me if someone else quotes them. I wonder if there's a way around that.

It's a complete lack of tolerance of other points of view, and his posts are more about criticizing posters than about baseball. Enough already.

Maybe that's the case and it will never get better. It looks like the posters are unable or unwilling to be mature about it, and admins are unwilling to step in. And that's a shame. Just imagine how many knowledgeable baseball posters take one look at the flame wars here and never bother to post.

He is only asking to focus in baseball discussion all along.

Entering a discussion that he wasn't a part of and writing a paragraph of insults about the other poster and how they never discuss baseball does nothing whatsoever to focus the discussion back on baseball.

This is part of the problem. Both "factions" of posters here fail to acknowledge how they're at fault for any of this, but flame wars simply don't happen without two willing participants.

A lot of people here think that A700 is probably the most knowledgeable and friendly poster in the forum. Look at the talksox awards. His history on talksox speaks by itself.

He's not the problem at all, just the opposite.

As I said... the real problem here is that some posters take baseball opinions so personal.. Why? Still have no idea.

Honestly, while a700 and I are on good terms now, there is something to be said about the number of fights one gets into. Hell the one time I got temp banned was for fighting him. We're all guys, we're bound to be jerks every once in a while (I'm obviously guilty here and there). I definitely think he's knowledgeable, and I do not mean any disrespect Ted, but I would not put "a700" and "nicest poster" in the same sentence. I'd have to look over the award threads and see who voted him.

That said, a700 does defend a lot of posters as well. He's defended a few that have been ganged up on. I feel like a700 is one of those where you either love him or hate him. No homo. (Thank god I don't have any money or else I'd get fined for that)

Edit: How the hell can anyone win the nicest poster award over Y228 anyway?

This is true, it's definitely not perfect, but it helps. I think if people used the ignore feature, they'd be less likely to see certain posts, and would be less likely to make angry posts in response, and people would be less likely to see those angry posts and respond etc etc. But it's just as much about posters making passive aggressive cheap shots as it is about the ignore feature.

I think if you take into account a dozen or so posters adding another dozen or so posters on ignore, things would look a lot different. It obviously won't solve anything (as no forum I've seen has a "complete ignore" system) but I think it's a good start.

New Rule; It is prohibited to send around on pm or post on the forum pictures of crushed heads with brains hanging out.

New Rule #2-- After you have been perma-banned under 10 or more different identities, you will not be welcomed back. Standing Room has probably doubled that, so completely lacks credibility with regard to governing behavior on this forum.

While there is truth to that, I think he's been good under this account, and UN has been better since returning. I'm glad I don't have to make those decisions. I'm all for having some posters back if they can prove they've grown up. I mean the difference from my posting style when I started here in 2009 vs. now is immense, I'd probably be permabanned from here too if I didn't change.

Some things (like the nasty pictures) there are obviously no excuses for) but I think there is a huge difference between someone at 18 and someone at 25. And the thing about permabans is that they tend to be permanent. :)

That said I miss Pumpsie. I don't really remember anything about him at this point but I liked seeing his avatar and he seemed like a good poster.

I have admitted many times on this forum that I can be a prick, but it almost always in response to someone else behaving badly. You wrote a paragraph long post full of insults, that mentioned discussing baseball as an afterthought. There's a pretty consistent pattern, it's as if self-constraint doesn't exist. Everyone has to interject their insults and get the last word. Is it really that hard to say "please discuss baseball?"

I have not engaged him since I put him on ignore today and I will not refer to him in my posts from this point on. Despite the ulterior motives that went into starting this thread, it's pretty clear to everyone that this place sucks. And its because of maybe 6 members who for some reason have gone all Hatfield and McCoy and won't get off each others nuts.

There are 2 solutions:

1) I hand out 6 or 7 permanent bans. And no one is allowed back. Activity on the forum takes an initial dip but everyone else suffers much much less. The only reason this hasn't happened yet is because I have way too many other things going on right now to read through threads to see who's taking pot shots at who.

2) This ridiculous feud stops. There's so much finger pointing in this thread veiled as "why can't we all get along" type comments. Those don't help either. Ignore each other or leave, but don't play the victim because everyone involved in this is wrong.
