Ford Focus is a quality car. It's cheap too.

Get a used Accord, you can get em relatively cheap and they're one of the most reliable cars out there.

I drive an '04 and I like it. Underpowered, but its still great.

edit: Nevermind, if you want an SUV or a pickup, you may as well just purchase gas every week or two and set fire to it. It's a more economical way to use it up I think.

I'd reccomend some type of Asian car; a Hyundai, if it still has its warentee (no, I can't spell). But as yeszir said, an Accord is pretty solid all around. Should have neough power for you. Or get a Civic and rice it out if you want.

If you are looking for a compact car you can't go wrong with an accord.

It's not compact. It barely fits into my garage. :(

Where do you live?

This COULD sound like a stupid question, but it matters. I just got a new car in March so I did a ton of research on them. I ended up getting a Subaru WRX (which I would tell my friends to get, GREAT car) which you COULD get used for around $15k, BUT if you don't live where it's winter 11 months of the year (Vermont), it's a waste of gas money to get Subaru's AWD.

Cars I considered:

Honda Civic
VW Golf/GTI
MINI Cooper S

Depends on your priorities. If you want gas milage, you could always go Geo, but that really is under powered.

You can't get the Cooper used (well, it's hard to find), and the Civic may not have enough power/acceleration for you.

You may want to look into a mid-late 90s VW GTI or Golf. If you can, get one with VERY FEW electronic gizmos (power windows, sun roof, power seats, etc) because they're just going to stop working and cost you more money to fix them.
