I know calvnhobs and I are big movie buffs, so why don't we all talk about movies. :dunno:

I just watched "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray for the first time, and it was excellent. The ending was a bit weak though.

Maybe we can work out some sort of recommendation system for each other, that would be cool. Anyhoo, my favorite movie is Dr. Strangelove: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. You should all see it, classic Kubrick in black and white.

.....just trying to start off the thread.

Super Troopers stands up to repeated viewing, I think. It's not meant to be taken seriously, so just have a good time watching it. Some of those jokes never get old.

i don't know. the first time i saw it i almost died laughing. the 4th time i don't think i even laughed hard at all. shitty.. just like family guy, i've seen every episode about 10 times each. i can basically tell the jokes before they happen. same goes for south park and futurama.

Well, if we're talking about movies in theaters, Life Aquatic is the kind of really subtle, low-key humor that very few people can appreciate. I loved the movie.
Other movies still in theaters that I'd recommend right now:
SIDEWAYS - a must-see. Absolutely hilarious.
TEAM AMERICA - The opposite of Life Aquatic. The humor is pretty obvious, and at times excessive - in a really good way.
OCEAN'S 12 - Not as good as the first, it was more entertaining than good. Fun to see, though I can't really saw it was a good movie. I enjoyed it though.
MEET THE FOCKERS - Very funny stupid comedy. First one was better, but this was pretty damn funny. It has grossed over 250 million dollars, so you know it's at least worth seeing.
GARDEN STATE - This is a rental. A must see movie, Zach Braff is awesome in the movie - again, very subtle humor, but just really good.
NAPOLEON DYNAMITE - You'll either love it or hate it, or think it's okay. I thought it was okay. MUCH better when you watch it with a group of people.
THE INCREDIBLES - The best animated movie of all time. Hands down. Really an amazing movie. It's funny, and has a great plot. It'd make a great live action movie too.

So yeah, I'd recommend all of those somewhat recent releases into theaters and onto DVD.

Office Space never gets old. One of my all time favorie comedies. But my favorite comedy (compliments to YesZir for showing it to me for the first time) has to be My Cousin Vinny.

My favorite movie of all time (and I still debate this with myself) is probably Fight Club. Two of my favorite actors (specifically Edward Norton, but I think Pitt's a great actor also), one of my favorite singers (Meat Loaf), and one of the best directors in hollywood today (David Fincher) is a can't miss movie.

Cool thread.

Funniest movie of ALL TIME has got to be the Big Lebowski. I've seen that movie like 5 times and am dying to see it again.

Best movie I've seen recently: Open Water. The first 30 minutes are forgettable, but the last hour is terrifying.

Here's a list of the dvd's I have (http://bellsouthpwp.net/c/h/chinigor/dvd/index.html) so far. I only started collecting a couple of years ago.

Can't wait to see Team America when it's out on DVD. And Sky Captain (it looked gay, but got great reviews and looks awesome).

That is IMO the second funniest movie of all time. I have no idea how many times I've seen it, upwards of 15. John Goodman is classic. One of my favorite exchanges:
Jesus Quintana: You ready to be fucked man? I see you rolled your way into the semis. Dios mio, man. Liam and me, we're gonna fuck you up.
The Dude: Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Jesus Quintana: Let me tell you something, bandejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I'll take it away from you, stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger 'til it goes "click."
The Dude: Jesus.
Jesus Quintana: You said it man. Nobody fucks with the Jesus.
Walter Sobchak: Eight year-olds, Dude.

Hilarious, unique, and well-made, Amelie is the kind of movie that anyone would like...unless you're illeterate and can't read subtitles. Anyway, go rent it! She'll change your life...

Good Movies: American Pie 1-2/Wedding, Road Trip, Euro Trip, Old School, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Big Daddy, Office Space, Dumb and Dumber, Scary Movie 1, 2, and 3, Austin Powers (all 3), Malibus Most Wanted. But the best of all, Hardball. I remember the first time I saw that. The school had lost power, and we were all bunched in the cafeteria. Finally around 9:30 the power hadnt come on and they sent us home. I then watched it, and I found out it was the greatest movie ever.

I knew this kid in grade school named Kumar Appedwaylia. He was from India and barely spoke a word of English. We were in like the 4th or 5 grade.

At first everyone made fun of him - he was also extremely short. But as time went on, the whole class kind of took him under it's wing. By 8th grade he was no longer known as Kumar. It was KUUMAAAAAARRR! (like Nomaaaah). Pretty funny.

It's probably the only reason I've thought about renting that movie.

I won't let this die! Anyway, two great hitchcock movies that I just saw are Rear Window and The Man Who Knew Too Much. Both are great, but Rear Window was a bit better. Even though they were made in 59 and 55, respectively (I think), the suspense and cinematography still hold up. Jimmy Stewart is the man.

I also saw "Stolen Kisses," a French film by Francois Truffaut from the 60's. It was alright, but not as good as the Hitchcock's. These are being seen in conjunction with reading Truffaut's book of interviews with Hitchcock, so it's pretty interesting to see.

I didn't even hear any hype & I live in LA, where when movies are hyped-THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. Maybe they marketed the Midwest / East Coast harder than here.

Anyway, I thought it was good fun, especially the part where they are running away from the 2 "farmers". Dax walking out in front of the guys laser sight made me laugh the hardest I have in a REALLY long time.

YanksHater213
02-16-2005, 02:02 PM
I think I may have worded it wrong. It wasnt really hype, it was just the fact that with Seth Green, who is funny as anyone, and Dax, I thought that it would be more of a comedy. Dont get me wrong, it was a great movie, but I just thought that it would be a lot funnier than it actually was.

Ok, I saw Saw, and I liked it. I was expecting a surprise ending but didn't see what they had coming at all. I always like those types of movies when it's not stupid (and many have said this ending is stupid..). There were spots when the acting and/or writing was a little weak (Elwes esp..), but it's one of the few movies that I may rewatch because of the ending...

I saw Coffee and Cigarettes. It was OK. Interesting idea for sure, but pretty boring.

I also saw Friday Night Lights. It also was good, but the Billy Bob character was terribly underwritten. It would have been much better if Thorton had better material. They also blew right through some of the games way too fast leaving you little time to keep up with what the players were doing and how they were winning the games. It was a good sports film, but not in the same league as Miracle if you ask me.

It was interesting to watch the extras though - and hear more about Boobie.

Up next, Cellular and Employee of the Month. I don't know anything about these two.

Ok, I'm a little forgiving at times with movies. I was ready to give Cellular an "ehh" rating. Probably :thumbdown , but with more of a reason. But that has changed now.

I also saw Employee of the Month and was ready to give it a  , but that's in question now too. It's been so long since I've seen a really good movie, I've forgotten what it's like to truly enjoy one.

That said, Rabbit-Proof Fence, which I saw tonight is absolutly a gem. I can't say enough about how good it is. It is why movies are great.

Yes, now in comparison, EOM and Cellular SUCK as do most Hollywood movies. Rabbit-Proof Fence.

See it.

PS, it's based on a true story which makes it all the more interesting.

Also, since Jet Li is the man, and the professional was kickass, this will be an awesome movie: http://www.apple.com/trailers/focus_features/unleashed-tlr.html

I saw Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

F-n GREAT. A tad slow towards the ending, but looks awesome.
How can you not like a film noir/sci-fi/action/WW2ish/mad scientist movie???

Gwyneth Paltrow has officially gone from sorta cute to smoking hot. The whole movie was shot on blue screen, which makes it all the more impressive that the special effects were not overblown.

Watch the extras.

I just saw this movie "Hard Boiled", directed by John Woo, and it was crazy. Extremely short on plot and crummy in the dialogue department (not to mention the fact that it's in Chinese), but the action is incredible. Thousands of people get shot in this movie, I recommend it for the cool gunplay.

The whole batch of new comedies (those starring Farrel, Vaugh, sometimes Stiller, etc) are pretty much all the same and should be excluded from all-time greatest movies. They really dont deserve to be there in my opinions. What makes a comedy great is if it stands up to the test of time.

Harry Potter? Haha. I hope the movies arent half as bad as the books are. I saw one of them, I forget which, but it absolutely blew.
Harry Potter movies, especially the two most recent ones, are surprisingly good. Directors seem to know what to do with the material, and they do it well. Also, one of the female leads, whose name I will omit for fear of being creepy, is quite the looker. ;)

Anyway, recent movies I've seen (some for the umpteenth time) include:

American Psycho 4.5/5
Dr. Strangelove: Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb 5/5 my all-time favorite
Leon (AKA The professional) 4/5
Airplane! 4.5/5
Young Frankenstein 4/5
Crash 4.5/5

Actually, I'd already seen all of these movies, but I was introducing them to friends who had never seen them before.

I HATED 100% of Harry Potter 4. It wasn't funny, it was too long, half the scenes were unnecessary. The only good scenes were the ones about the tournament, and those weren't even that good. It was awful.

I liked the 3rd HP movie the best. The latest one seemed kind of boring and slow moving, I really didn't think it had to be that long of a movie. The scenes with the Triwizard events didn't seem as exciting as I thought they would be and they should of spent more time on the Quidditch World Cup.

I agree with YH that 40 year old virgin just wasn't as funny as I thought it would be. It had a few one-liners here and there but not as much stuff that just kept me laughing. Some of my friends were like the part with the body wax was just so funny, but that kind of humor doesn't really do it for me.

CalvnHobs6
12-18-2005, 06:25 PM
I think the reason the body wax scene was so funny was because it was real. They ACTUALLY waxed him, and those reactions from the actors were completely real. My favorite movie is an actual black and white movie from the '60's, so I guess I'll live.

And the 40 year old virgin was surprisingly funny. The body wax scene was entertaining because torturing people is amusing, but the rest of the movie certainly had its moments. Anything Steve Carell does is genius though.

I was a little disappointed with it, as were the Asian communities around the world. The Japanese and Chinese were both highly critical of the movie, as were US critics. I thought it was a little shallow and yeah, a bit too long.

On the other hand...Brokeback Mountain was easily the greatest movie Ive seen in a really long time...epic, charming, thought-provoking, controversial, and just all around well developed.
