View Full Version : Official Spring Training Game Thread

Well since the first spring training game is tomorrow, I figured that we should start a game thread that will be used for discussion about all of the exhibition games.

Tomorrow's game is against the Twins and it will be on NESN at 7. Matt Clement will be starting for the Sox and Kyle Lohse will be pitching for the Twins. Not a lot of the key guys will be playing such as Manny, Ortiz, Johnny and Trot. But Renteria is scheduled to be in the lineup, so we will be able to get our first look at him.

Baseball! Hooray! And this is the one and only spring training game thread. All games will be discussed here, any new threads will be merged.

Anyone know how good the reception is on the thing MLB.com offers? If you go here http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/video/daily.jsp and click on the archived Mets game (top link), you'll get an idea. They use Real player for live games, which is cool because you can switch to Theater Mode and play it at 200% on a black background.

Obviously, the better the connection, the better the stream... I remember the games a couple of years ago when I had a 56k modem were really not that bad.

Ew, mlbtv uses real player? I hate that crap. Is there any option to use another player? I'll be relying on this service next year, and I have made a vow to never have real player installed on a computer of mine again.

I am right there with you on the Real player. They offer both Real and Media Player - but I find the theater mode in Real to be much more enjoyable. If you take the Real Player install REAL slow, you can set your associations, etc. then. But if you fly through it, Real will take over your machine. :thumbdown

It's very nice seeing Tek in the "C" jersey, Youkilis made a nice clean play over at third, and I think Clement's 1-2-3 second inning is what we should mostly expect from him this year. Payton's double wasn't too shabby either.

BK was not very impressive to me. He threw one over a batter's head and gave up 2 long shots, which may have been homers if the wind wasn't whirling in.

CalvnHobs6
03-03-2005, 07:55 PM
Gonzalez looked good, and BK's velocity is back up to close to what it should be. I think he'll make a great righty specialist/long relief for us this year.

stocker323
03-03-2005, 08:02 PM
I didn't notice a radar reading while BK was pitching, and I can't really tell on TV if a pitcher's velocity. Was there a reading?

And it looks like Giambi will be one of the players present tomorrow:

Giambi was among seven regulars chosen Sunday for the travel squad for the New York Yankees' split-squad game against the Boston Red Sox in Fort Myers. It will be the first meeting of the rivals since Boston beat the Yankees in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series last October, becoming the first major league team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a postseason series.

Spring training is like crab dip before a steak dinner. It ain't what fills you, but it tastes so good you have to have some.

I love spring training. It gets people in the mood for baseball. The fact that you don't see the real lineups, the stand ins, the wild games that mean nothing... it's just game and sometimes that means more than the ones that count.

Spring Training is such a bad barometer on how a team will do for the regular season, I acually hope the Mariners lose games during the spring. Look at last year, they did great, they couldn't lose and they SUCKED in the regular season. That is why i am liking these standings:

Team W L PCT
Cleveland 8 3 .727
Los Angeles 10 4 .714
Toronto 7 4 .636
Tampa Bay 6 4 .600
Baltimore 6 5 .545
Detroit 6 5 .545
Chicago 7 7 .500
New York 5 6 .455
Minnesota 5 8 .385
Oakland 5 8 .385
Boston 4 7 .364

65 pitches for Curt today in his first MLB Spring Training game. His line was 3.2 innings 3 runs 5 hits 2 walks 3 strikeouts. The first run wasn't really his fault as Manny misplayed a ball and Bellhorn and Renteria had a little miscommunication on a bleeder up the middle. In the 4th he gave up back to back homers to Jones and Restovich.

Overall he looked pretty good, the only negative I'd say would be his location, but that will come with a few more starts. I think the home opener could be reachable right now.

Ok, well on Wednesday, the 23rd, I was at the Spring Training game against the Reds. Sean Casey and Adam Dunn are beasts. DO almost cleared that 40 foot tall tarp in straight away center, 410 ft.

Anyway, that is irrelevant. While I was there drooling at the nice seats we had, my friend's dad recognized the man sitting next to us, but couldn't quite put a name to it. He had a huge world series ring on, and so we asked him about it. He said it was from the '70s, and my friend's dad immediately recognized the figure as a Yankee. Yep, a member from the '76 Yankees that went by the name...

*drum roll*

Jim Beady---so I was wondering:
Because 1976 was a good 14 years before I was born---->does anyone who was around back then know anything about him off the top of their heads? I know there is something called "google," but I am too lazy to use it. Anyone got anything interesting about him? If so, it would be cool to hear it. And another thing, we also met an agent, I forget his name, but he was an agent for many famous, famous Red Sox...one being Carlton Fisk.

I gotta tell ya, you never know what you can find at games in the Spring.

I also went to the game on Thursday against the Orioles, and I gotta tell ya, Sosa looked EXCELLENT. Solid contact everytime...he's gunna have a good year. Even the outs that he recorded were smashed to all areas of the deep outfield.

So that's my spring training story----now back to the point:

Any information on Jim Beady? And also anyone know the name of Carlton Fisk's agent? (I see his face but can't remember the damn name.)
