Yea, I know it's a Red Sox minor league system, but I'm asking Zenny, is this guy any good?

Zenny
03-23-2005, 07:33 PM
Right now, he's Russ Branyan. If he pitch recognition comes along, he could be very good. He showed very good power as a 19 YO in the FSL last season, but we all need to see more. He isn't garbage by any stretch, but he's a weak #1 prospect in a very weak system.

He's Todd Helton basically.

He's Todd Helton basically. His work ethic is compared to Helton, not his playing skills.

His playing skills were compared to Larry.

HA! ERIC DUNCAN IS THE NEXT TODD HELTON! Not even close, Helton hits .340 every year with 35 bombs, Duncan won't ever do that. Duncan K's too much to be considered to Helton.

He's a .280 hitter with 20 HR power

Duncan has good isolated stats, and that's pretty much it. Who knows if his contact will ever come. Because, like Zenny said, his pitch recognition is not there.

you're kidding me right? this kid doesn't crack baseball americas top 35 prospects and you think he's the next tod helton? being hopeful is one thing and being crazy is another.

tod helton has a career ops of over 1.000, his obp is always hovering around .450 and he slugs around .610 every season, along with that he takes a lot of walks and k's little. one of the games best hitters.

of all the players in the mlb how many are at heltons level? 7, maybe 8?

Duncan did play in a pitcher's league, and a pitcher's park, though.

He was in the top 25 in most top minor leaguers list. Narci is going to be even better.

john He won't be a third baseman when he makes the team.

What is it with prospects? He's a Yankee farm prospect, chances are he'll be elsewhere

He won't be a third baseman when he makes the team.

that has nothing to do with the fact that he won't come close to putting up the numbers helton does offensively.

What's good for Duncan's chances to be a Yankee is that there is a 1B opening. There are a couple more relevant things bad for Duncan's chances of being a Yankee: 1) He's a Yankee prospect... bye 2) If his pitch recognition doesn't come, he won't even be a major leaguer 3) If all breaks right, the Yankees will have sought out a long-term solution at 1B within the 2 1/2 to 3 years it's going to take him to be even a slightly capable starting player.

They are both much better hitters than Eric Duncan will ever be.

You're right actually. Any one prospect could turn into a great player. The chances of it happening for Duncan are slim right now, but he has potential. He needs to make some serious adjustments to reach that level, but hey, even Chad Spann could even turn into one of those guys.

I'll put it this way. There is a 0.01% chance that Duncan could reach that level. But still, there is that chance.

But his worth ethic and raw skills make him more of a 5 or a 10%. Still low, but higher than most prospects.

11. Eric Duncan, 3B, Yankees, Age: 20
Duncan is the best prospect in the Yankee system and the only prospect in the Yankee system (with apologies to Robinson Cano) worth mentioning. A first-rounder in 2003, Duncan boasts good bat speed, raw power and polished hitting skills. His defense needs work at this point, but there's no reason he can't stick at third long-term. Last season, despite being only 19 years of age, he showed good raw power in the Midwest and Florida State Leagues and made strides with his plate discipline. He's for real, and expect big numbers from him in 2005.
