8:05 PM EST.

So it begins. I have created this thread the day before the game because, well hey, it's opening day. Usually game threads should be created day of game. The previous game's thread will be closed upon commencement of the next day's game.

Looks like it's gonna be Johnson v. Wells. Wells is 16-8, 2.94 lifetime vs. NYY, and Johnson 8-6, 4.41 lifetime vs. BOS. This is the first of 18 games between the two teams, I think, so there's plenty more where this comes from. Even though it is practically meaningless (first game, half of our rotation is injured), I'm sure whoever wins this will be bragging until, well, until tomorrow. This is gonna be fun.

Great sentence right there, yeszir!

Can't wait for the game. I wish Schilling could pitch that game, that would be the ultimate. Schilling vs. Johnson, 2001 WS Champ teammates.

Early tentative lineups

Red Sox

Damon CF
Renteria SS
Ramirez LF
Ortiz DH
Millar 1B
Varitek C
Payton RF
Mueller 3B
Bellhorn 2B

Yankees

Jeter SS
Rodriguez 3B
Sheffield RF
Sierra DH
Matsui LF
Posada C
Giambi 1B
Williams CF
Womack 2B

Sierra batting cleanup is very interesting, when I first saw that I thought it was a typo. Sierra is 23-62 against Wells, which apparently is Torre's thoughts.

If you don't mind yeszir, later on tonight (Sat.) I might provide a link to the post on my website previewing the Sox and baseball in 2005 on this thread. It has a pretty good amount of detail to it so I thought I might give everyone a chance to read it.

And about opening day....LET'S GO RED SOX!

Does the Yankee lineup look as horrible to anyone else as it does to me. Outside of Jeter, Rodriguez, Sheffield, and Matsui, they don't really have anything.

And no, we don't mind Tex.

Yes, but not because it's not good. Because it's the yankees, and they always look horrible. ;) Linking is fine tex, if it has good stuff.

Yeah, because David Wells record in big games (11-3 3.22 ERA) is a good track record of choking.

Just over an hour to go! I'm so freaking excited for this game. I predict a little bit of a high scorer, even with the two quality starters. Something like 6 - 4 Red Sox. Oh yeah, did I say I was excited?

yeszir
04-03-2005, 08:22 PM
So i guess Wells' sup-par performance of the spring has carried over into the season. Hopefully he'll get things into line soon though, because our rotation can't deal with a faltering starter, let alone the temporary #1 guy. It's not the end of the world though, seeing as how its only the 4th, and it is the first game of the season.

Also, welcome to the site jillpie.

Something that was just brough up during the telecast:

Both David Wells and Randy Johnson have thrown perfect games.

I wonder if this is the first time in MLB history that two opposing pitchers have pitched perfect games. I would think so, but you never know. I guess I have to do some research...

Wells is clearly not fooling many hitters. Time for middle relief.

yeszir

I've never really taken a good look at Wells' curveball aside from video games. That one that he threw to Williams, I believe, earlier in the game was downright nasty.

Ramirez having a horrible night thus far, Johnson pitching better than expected. On a bright note, the Yankees do have Tom Gordon warming up in the bullpen.

Final pitching stats....here's all of 'em before you can get them from anyone else...

D. Wells: 4 ER, 10 H, 4.1 IP, 4/1 K/BB, 2 HB, 0 HR, 80 PC
M. Myers: 0 ER, 0 H, .2 IP, 0/0 K/BB, 0 HB, 0 HR, 2 PC
B. Neal: 1 ER, 1 H, .1 IP, 0/1 K/BB, 0 HB, 0 HR, 10 PC
A. Embree: 0 ER, 1 H, .2 IP, 0/1 K/BB, 0 HB, 0 HR, 16 PC
M. Timlin: 0 ER, 1 H, 1 IP, 1/0 K/BB, 0 HB, 0 HR, 25 PC
M. Mantei: 2 ER, 1 H, .2 IP, 1/3 K/BB, 0 HB, 1 HR, 29 PC
J. Halama: 0 ER, 1 H, .1 IP, 0/0 K/BB, 0 HB, 0 HR, 8 PC

PC= pitch count (just thought i'd toss that out there for those who don't read statistics as much)

Overall Boomer didn't look the greatest, and if I hate to take some positive out of that, look at the numbers Timlin put up.

Well I wouldn't have had high hopes with Wells anyway.

We know how good he can be, so he was certainly worth signing, but on the other hand, at this point in his life we certainly can't bank on him either. He hasn't exactly been a benchmark of consistency in recent years. I hope they have a back up plan whether they'll need it or not.

Papi dominates Mariano. But Randy Johnson, not so much.

RedSoxRooter
04-04-2005, 09:51 PM
One thing to take away from yesterday's game is that, although Johnson pitched extremely well, he was not dominant. He's going to have his troubles with this Boston lineup because they don't strike out very much (outside of Bellhorn <_<). Call me crazy but I think Manny and Ortiz will own him this year. And Millar may be a big factor too, being he's a dead fastball guy.

I don't read lips but I would swear I saw Johnson say "I don't want any part of this guy" to himself before proceeding to walk Millar 4-0.
