Game preview from Redsox.com:

David Wells, coming off a vintage performance against the Orioles, now has the challenge of duplicating that feat on Monday night at Fenway Park.

Back come the O's to open up a three-game series in Boston. Last Wednesday at Camden Yards, Wells fired eight innings of three-hit shutout ball against the normally heavy-hitting O's.

After losing two out of three to the Devil Rays over the weekend, the Sox will try to get rolling again at Fenway, where they went 6-2 on their first homestand.

Left-hander Bruce Chen will pitch for the American League East-leading O's.

Pitching matchup
BAL: LHP Bruce Chen
• 1-1, 3.38 ERA in 2005
• 0-1, 7.11 ERA in 2005 vs. BOS

BOS: LHP David Wells
• 2-2, 3.51 ERA in 2005
• 1-0, 0.00 ERA in 2005 vs. BAL

Player to watch
Third baseman Bill Mueller, who has missed five of the last six games with flu-like symptoms and a respiratory illness, is expected to return to the lineup.

Quotable
"[David] Ortiz hit some big home runs here. Those balls weren't hit softly. I'm on deck, and I have to go up and hit after that. He's the big cat." -- Sox first baseman Kevin Miller on Ortiz's weekend launch party at Tropicana Field

Interesting to note that Wells' stellar start of the season came against Baltimore. Let's hope he can keep it up.

When was the last time TWO lefties started a game in Fenway? Good to hear Billy will be back in the lineup. Maybe Payton will get the nod, and receive a nice hand for his granny. Didn't DLowe pitch his no-no around this date a few years back? Maybe Wells can follow suit.

Well, since Chen is a lefty like you said, I don't think Nixon will be in the starting lineup, especially since lefties are hitting .150 off of him this season and Trot couldn't hit a beachball with a tennis racket if it was thrown from the left side.

On a related note...Manny was named AL player of the week:

Not sure how reliable that link is considering it says Manny is a right fielder. I know they aren't lieing when they say Manny won the award, but he certainly isn't a right fielder. So maybe the site just doesn't know their facts.

Welcome back. They were just syndicating the news from this site: http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=/mlb/news/AAN3865358.htm it appears. Sportsnetwork is a pretty established website, I dont know how they could get Manny's position mixed up.

on the lineup on RedSox.Com they have vazquez at 3B again so I guess Billy isn't 100% just yet....get healthy!!!!!

EDIT: but I don't think they're right because they have Millar in LF, Manny @ DH, and ortiz @ 1B...

I can not see Chen giving up less than 5 runs tonight. He throws garbage, and we mash garbage.

What is the deal with Ortiz at first and Manny DHing? Anything wrong with Manny? I see Ortiz already made an error.

Let me get this straight. We trounce the D-Rays last night, and now we're losing by 3 in the early going to the Orioles? Inconsistency much?

Well, I think something is definitely wrong with Wells. He doesn't seem 100%.

yeszir

He's obviously laboring out there. Wells usually throws pitch after pitch at a good clip, but he's really slowed down. It's getting to be 30 seconds between pitches now. Something is definitely not right with him.

Get out of Boston Vazquez. You don't hit much, and when you get solid contact, you don't even hustle 100%...just leave.

Like, holy shit Edgar, you suck.

Calm down man its no big deal. Do you realize that not only changing teams but leagues isnt that easy. He has to learn where to play defense for certain players and learn to gel with the players around him. He also has never played in the American League before. Terry Francona said it himself to give him a month and you'll see the real Renteria. Anything we are getting now is a plus from him.

The Card's had the best inside info on Edgar. If they felt his best days were behind him, why would they make him a similar offer? He'll be fine. It looks like most of the Sox offense is a little sluggish coming out of the gate.

Renteria is not a .330 hitter, that was a blip in the radar. But he is not a .270 hitter either. He is as advertised, a good hitter with the occasional pop, great D, and great speed. If you want a .300 average out of him, you may be waiting awhile, but he will give you consistent .290 30 doubles with slick D and 20-30 SBs, if he doestn do that I will be shocked, but as has been said, it is early. Lots of very good veterans have awful starts, it is in their blood, just look at the yankees....

BoSox Rule
04-25-2005, 08:45 PM
He's overrated defensively, too. Edgar Renteria was always overrated, other than in 2003, a clear outlier in his career. He's been a below average hitter and fielder his entire career.

I think they are allowed it, they just choose not to because it only encourages people. If Comedy Central can air uncut movies, NESN can show some guy running. Heck, he could even be naked.

Things I hate seeing (from the Boston.com postgame recap)

1:
- Brian Roberts stole second. Runner on second with none out and Melvin Mora at the plate.
- Melvin Mora struck out on a foul bunt. Runner on second with one out and Miguel Tejada due up.
- Brian Roberts stole third. Runner on third with one out and Miguel Tejada at the plate.
- Miguel Tejada grounded out short to first scoring Brian Roberts.

2:
- Rafael Palmeiro struck out swinging. On the play, Luis Matos stole second. Runner on second with one out and Geronimo Gil due up.
- Luis Matos stole third. Runner on third with one out and Geronimo Gil at the plate.
- Geronimo Gil struck out swinging. Runner on third with two outs and Brian Roberts due up.

Even if the last time didnt result in a run, we're letting them go from 1st to 3rd for free! Aaaaah!
