Mlb.com preview:

The Red Sox will try to start another winning streak when they welcome the Oakland A's to town Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park.

Boston had its season-high five-game streak halted Sunday in the second game of a day-night doubleheader against Seattle. Tim Wakefield will be on the hill for Boston, opposed by struggling Oakland right-hander Dan Haren.

David Ortiz comes into the contest as the team leader in home runs (nine) and second to Manny Ramirez in RBIs (23). Ortiz knocked in three runs in the 6-4 loss Sunday, including his 500th career RBI.

The Red Sox have won their last three series and look to make it four straight against an Oakland team they dominated in 2004, winning eight of nine meetings.

Pitching matchup
OAK: RHP Dan Haren
• 1-4, 5.50 ERA in 2005
• No record in 2004 vs. BOS

BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield
• 3-1 2.97 ERA in 2005
• 1-0, 0.00 ERA in 2004 vs. OAK

Player to watch
Center fielder Johnny Damon, back from a sore left hamstring, extended his hitting streak to 14 games Sunday with hits in both games. It is the longest such active streak in the American League and tied for the longest in the AL in 2005. He is hitting .455 (30-for-66) with 12 runs scored during the stretch and has a team-leading 15 multihit games.

Quotable
"Just pat him on the back and ask him if he's going to be OK. That's a tough way to start. He'll be OK. I wish, obviously we all wish, it would have worked out a little differently." -- Sox manager Terry Francona after Cla Meredith allowed a grand slam to Richie Sexson Sunday in the reliever's big league debut

Quick hits
Sox shortstop Edgar Renteria (bruised right index finger) could be back Monday after being a late scratch prior to Game 2 Sunday. Francona said Renteria played long catch and then decided he needed one more day ... Mark Bellhorn made his first appearance at shortstop Sunday since starting July 21, 2004, vs. Baltimore. He has made 29 appearances and 15 starts at the position over his career.

Let's go Red Sox! I'm liking our shots with Wake on the mound against Haren.

They need to find a way to get Youk into that lineup everyday.

Sox up 1-0 on a sacrifice double play.

Johnny extends his hit streak to 15 games. Way to go.

Manny got hit in the head and had to leave the game.

Manny's a magnet for balls. (hehe). I hope he's ok, taking two hits like that two days in a row can't be fun.

I was actually thinking the same thing. Usually hes pretty good at getting out of the way of balls. Either that or he exaggerates how close the ball actually is to him.

You try getting out of the way of a ball like that. :)

Man, this offense has nowhere to go but up. When it gets warmer, imagine what Bellhorn, Millar, Nixon, Rent, Manny and Oritz will do. You have to admit that, outside of Damon and maybe Tek, the Sox sluggers have been quite cold, and we're still winning. This will be one hellova summer.

We're already projected for a 97+ win season. Oh, and we got 6 starters when all are healthy. :)

Yeah, has anyone else noticed that Damon is doing pretty well right now? :)

Oh, and before I forget, it's notable that Oakland actually outscored us in the earned runs category. NINE unearned runs - that is truly pathetic (and props to the Sox' batters who took advantage of the extra outs).

Post #13 is a good summary.

In other news, the entire AL East won today. The Orioles and Devil Rays even beat good teams (Twins and Chi-Sox, respectively). Not sure what that means, but it's a nice factoid.

Ok, who was watching when Cla Meredith came in? Crowd reaction? And also, how'd he do?

ehh and ehhh. Actually he got an ovation after the last out (sarcastic bastards you all). I'm pulling for him though.

Of course I've noticed...he's on my fantasy team.

It was pretty nice seeing him get that ovation as he came out. Hopefully that gives him more confidence for the future. I missed the last game he pitched in against Seattle, so this was the first time I've seen him pitch and I think he has a bright future ahead of him.

im pulling for him too but if he's throwing 87-88 mph fastball he needs some nasty breaking pitches to not get killed. I only saw him throw against Seattle but it seemed like all he threw was that fastball.
