A look at the new Cubs
By Adam Caldarelli

Exit Patterson and Dubois; enter Murton and Greenberg. This isn't a law firm representing the Cubs, but the two outfielders the team called up from Double-A West Tenn last night to replace the struggling Corey Patterson and the under-used Jason Dubois.

If you're not familiar with Matt Murton and Adam Greenberg, we've done a little research. Here's what we've found:

Of the two, Murton is the higher-rated prospect. A former first-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox, he was a vital part of the 2004 trade that brought Nomar Garciaparra to the Cubs.

In fact, had Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein been unwilling to part with Murton, the trade would have fizzled.

''We liked Matt when he was with the Red Sox, and now he's even better than we imagined," Cubs GM Jim Hendry was quoted as saying on Ivy Walls, a Cubs blog. ''Murton was key in that deal for Garciaparra. If we hadn't gotten Matt, we wouldn't have done the deal.''

So far so good. In his first full year in the Cubs organization, Murton has been on a tear with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. He leads the Southern League with 107 hits and his .342 average ranks second.

By most accounts Murton is a big, powerful right-handed hitting left fielder with above-average speed (he's stolen 17 bases this season) who has worked hard on improving his defense. After seeing Murton in the Cape Cod League, ESPN baseball analyst Peter Gammons likened him to Edgar Martinez.

In an interview with RedSoxNation.net last June, Murton described himself as an all-baseball-all-the-time type player who drives the ball to the alleys.

"A lot of my power is from left center to right center," Murton said. "I do pull the ball, but when I'm swinging well I'm keeping my hands in and driving the ball up the middle. That's really important in handling breaking balls and changes."

Doing some back-reading of Red Sox fan message boards, Sox nation clearly seemed more upset over losing the hot prospect than the once-beloved face of the organization, Garciappara.

For example a user named Zenny posted this message on talksox.com June 31, 2004, the day of the trade.

"Murton was traded to the Cubs today. This thread can be closed while I go hang myself."

While Murton will be expected to contribute right away, the much speedier and defensive-oriented Greenberg will be used more as a bench player.

In seventy-three games with the Diamond Jaxx this season, the left-handed hitting Greenberg hit .275 with four homers and 27 RBIs. He also stole twelve bases and ranked third in the Southern League with seven triples.

He earned freshman All-American honors in 2001 at the University of North Carolina and was selected by the Cubs in the ninth round (273rd overall) in the 2002 draft.

And I didn't have to register in order to see the article for some reason.

Too bad the Tribune can't spell Nomar's last name:

Hahahaha Zenny is THE man. Of course, they didn't say what Red Sox board it was, but we all own here. And YanksHater, the past tense of "hang" is "hanged." I hate when people say hung, it's just the fact that it's wrong that kinda gets to me I guess.

You think you get annoyed easily at people's grammar? Psh. I've found myself changing posts here so they don't piss me off too much.

And in case you guys missed it, Zenny is gone. I don't know what happened, I just know that he's gone but is ok. So I doubt he knows about this.
