I am so mad at Griffey it hurts. This is a guy who right now should have 650 homeruns. Instead, he is 9 away from 500 (which is still a lot, don't get me wrong) and a ticket into the HOF.

Is he among the best ever? What do you all think?

I was just thinking this. He certainly could have been the best ever, with around 600+ homeruns. More than Bonds perhaps. But no, he has a penchant for running into walls. So now hes stuck at 491. A great player, no doubt, and most likely in the hall, but not one of the best ever.

It's a shame, but he still has some years left in him.

Edit - he hit another one tonight. A three run shot. 8 to go.

What's wrong with running into walls? If he's giving an all-out effort and gets hurt, well it shows that he's not just thinking of his stats. Who, besides him, should it bother how many home runs he has?

I really liked Griffey when I got to see him more often as a Mariner. With his constant injuries and National League trade, I haven't seen much of him recently. To see him playing well is awesome, and I feel good for one of the clasiest players in the game.

Will he hit 500 today? He hit his 499th in the second inning of today's game. He's been on a tear recently.

I hope so. B)

If not today, tomorrow. After being forgotten for so long, he's back with a vengeance, acting like the player we all thought he would be before all these injuries started hitting him (and before he started hitting walls).

Good idea to merge, whoever did it. ;)

Griffey is ridiculous... best swing. Ever. Also one of the best centerfielders to ever play as his 10 consecutive gold gloves can attest.

Sure, why wouldn't I have said that? Two years ago he still already had seven 40+ HR seasons and 10 Gold Gloves.

One away Griffey...he'll get it his next start on a grand slam.

That would be one hell of a way to get it, wouldnt it? I wonder how many people have done it that way.

I agree. Whoever merged the threads is the greatest super mod on the planet ever.

Any second now, he'll do it. The Reds game is in progress, and Griffey is facing Bierbrodt. In fact, he's up now.

Fly out. 500 lives another day....

Pedro
06-16-2004, 06:42 PM
Griffey has said that getting to 500 has been a distraction for the team. Could be right, they've lost 7 of their last 10.

Has anyone noticed what a freak Sean Casey has been this season during all this Griffey hysteria?

And the Reds are only two back in the Central. Just goes to show how one statistic can overshadow and entire team. (ie: Has anyone ever heard of the San Francisco Giants?)

Pedro
06-16-2004, 07:30 PM
Yeah, but Bonds is just ridiculous. He's hitting .370 with a share of the league lead in homeruns despite just 135 AB's and has a 1.456 OPS... :o

Year * * * *OPS

1992 * * * 1.080
1993 * * * 1.136
1994 * * * 1.073
1995 * * * 1.009
1996 * * * 1.076
1997 * * * 1.031
1998 * * * 1.047
1999 * * * 1.006
2000 * * * 1.127
2001 * * * 1.379
2002 * * * 1.381
2003 * * * 1.278
2004 * * * 1.456

Very, very impressive.... but somethin just doesn't look right towards the end of that streak. I don't have much of an opinion on it, but it is a fact that Bonds was already a 3-time MVP winner BEFORE 1994.

That's disgusting, steroids or not, that his OPS could climb like that. Pretty soon it'll be up there in the 2 range .

Also, Pedro, how did you get it to stay formatted like that? Usually when I post statistics with the code button the formatting messes up and it goes haywire.

Griffey will be up later on in this inning. :D

Well, he walked.

Pedro
06-16-2004, 07:50 PM
Yes, it's very disgusting.

OPS YEAR OPS
1 Barry Bonds 2002 1.381
2 Babe Ruth 1920 1.379
3 Barry Bonds 2001 1.379
4 Babe Ruth 1921 1.359
5 Babe Ruth 1923 1.309
6 Ted Williams 1941 1.287
7 Barry Bonds 2003 1.278
8 Babe Ruth 1927 1.258
9 Ted Williams 1957 1.257
10 Babe Ruth 1926 1.253

I don't know how it lines up like that for me... Make sure you PREVIEW your post before adding the reply, and if the code looks uneven, try and move a couple numbers to the right or left and then PREVIEW again until it lines up the way you want it. Most of the time, I don't have to do that, though.

He just singled. I think he's gonna be like Barry and take forever to get this 500th homerun.

So I guess we'll have to wait another day.... but the Reds won, once again being overshadowed by Griffey's non homerun.

Well, the Reds swept Texas, but Junior didnt get his 500th. I watched the game on ESPN 2 and everything. Damn.

Yes, it was bad to see him injured after he left the M's. He was named to the All-Century team in 2000 tho, and he probably deserves to be there.
