Well I know nothing about Roger Federer, but I think you should have to do more than win the SB to be the Sportsman of the year. The ChiSox won the World Series ... why not AJ? The Spurs won the NBA Championship ... why not Timmy?

Federer. He was 81-4 this year. Thats AMAZING. He won 12 titles (2 of them were grand slams, and one was doubles). Hes been #1 in the world for 90 weeks as of October 17th. Federer held a record 26 consecutive wins against top ten ranked opponents; the streak spanned from October 2003 to January 2005. Federer also owns the record for the highest ranking points at any time of the year for performances based on the past 52 weeks: 6980 points (June 6 and June 13, 2005). He also holds a 36-match winning streak on matches played on grass. Federer wins a third consecutive men's singles title at Wimbledon, a feat accomplished only by Borg and Sampras in the Open era. He has reached the quarter-finals or better in every tournament he entered this season. Federer's tally of 1,345 ATP Race points in 2005 is a new record since the Race began in 2000. He held the previous record of 1,267 points in 2004. He also only won 24 straight finals that he was in. Pretty amazing resume if you ask me. Certainly worth Sportsman of the Year.

Yeah, I don't think it should've been Brady. He's a great QB... the Patriots were a great team... but there's been Patriots over-load -- and I say that from way out here in Colorado.

This recognition goes far from the recent superbowl he had led his team to. The accolades he is piling up, 3 superbowls and 9-0 in the playoffs before he turned 28.... even if you're a fan of another football team, you cant get by how impressive of a QB he has become since he took over for Drew Bledsoe. Let alone he wasnt drafted until the 6th round.

Yeah, hes been impressive. But the stuff you said was over a time span thats not included in the last YEAR, which is why its called the Sportsman of the YEAR. You cant win 3 superbowls and go 9-0 in the playoffs in 1 year. Dont get me wrong, Tom is the man, hes been amazing for us. But sportsman of the year? I dont think so.

Roger Federer.

NEW YORK - New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year on Monday, a year after the Boston Red Sox became the first major pro sports team to receive the award. The last Boston-area athletes to receive it in consecutive years were Carl Yastrzemski of the Red Sox in 1967 and Bill Russell of the Celtics in 1968. Brady has led the Patriots to three Super Bowl championships in four years and was named MVP of the first two victories.

“Tom Brady is the consummate winner,” Sports Illustrated managing editor Terry McDonell said. “Against the steepest odds and on the grandest stage, he refuses to believe his team can be beaten. That character extends to his teammates and his fans.” The issue will appear on newsstands Wednesday. “It’s certainly a well-deserved honor and, to me, I would just add maybe ’person of the year,”’ Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Monday. “His makeup, his character and the way he carries himself on and off the field, in and out of football, is, I think, exemplary in all phases.” The last pro football player to receive the award was Joe Montana of San Francisco in 1990. Subsequently Montana was Tom Brady's boyhood idol and who he has been heavily compared to in his career.
