Was it Denucci?
Is it on that 80's DVD? I think they might show a clip of it, I'll have to check it out tonight.
Fucking Muraco was the balls back then. I can hear McMahon right now going "Oh, he spat right on him!!!" when Muraco nailed Snuka w/ that monster lungy to start the feud.

Mean, I found a reference to a website article saying it was Rudy Diamond:
I'll never forget the time Muraco wrestled perennial loser Rudy Diamond. During his match he had his manager Lou Albano feed him a meatball submarine sandwich while he wrestled. To add insult to injury, he also drank a Pepsi as he piledrived his opponent into the mat.

So did anyone see the Rumble last night? (not me... too leery it was going to suck like most of the weekly tv shows are sucking now).
From what I read on the internet rags it looks like it turned out to be an interesting show. A lot of surprises and not the same old same old results. For instance:
- Rey Mysterio won the Rumble??? He's now in line for a title shot at the next WM. Guess we'll see the build up for that in the upcoming weeks.
- Edge's title reign lasted a HUGE 3 weeks.... too bad, at least it pushed Edge into the upper elite even if it was a little while. Now we get to hear more of Cena's rapping.
- I never expected they'd push Greg Helms (the Hurricain) as cruiser weight champ. Hopefully since he's a little more popular than the other crusier weights they'll make something of that division. And hopefully Vince has opened his eyes that the smaller guys can kick ass in the ring and not to bury them to mid-card status.
- JBL pinned by the Boogey Man? Never thought that would have happened. Again, nice to see a change of pace in making the longtime vet job to put over the new guy.
- At least they've added some interest in the women's belt, with psycho Mickie James winning, and now she'll go up against Trish for the belt.

Wow, so Cena beat Edge huh?
I wonder why they gave Edge the ole Tommy Rich style reign?
Mysterios wins the Rumble?
So he gets a shot at who? Cena? It'll be intersting to see how this plays out because I can't see the top draw at the biggest event of the year being Mysterio vs Whoever-the-Champ-Is. So somthings gonna happen. Maybe Hunter will kill him before WM?
Fishsticks
01-30-2006, 01:17 PM
Hunter is a backstage politics scumbag and he'll weasle his way into the main event at WM. I think they'll be defending both titles, so whoever Rey wrestles will not be the top card.
So you remember Tommy Rich too? Heheh. Seems like it was ages ago that he was one of the most popular wrestlers in the country.
Regarding the WWE title situation, didn't Edge a couple of weeks ago infer something about unifying both belts? That would be a WM calibre card, but I can't see Rey in that mix.

Little known fact (although you probably know about it)
Tommy Rich and Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer ended their famous feud in 1982 (?) in the first "Hell in a Cell" match. That is, they fought in a cage w/ a roof on it. Vicious, bloody battle, by early 80's standards.
You have to wonder if Wildfire bled so much because of all the boooze diluting his system?

The mad dog was much more of a mad dog outside the ring unfortunately.
Another guy who died way too soon.
Fish I remember reading somewhere about Wild Fire's propensity for the sauce.
He's got more of a drinking problem than Mr Crunchy even.
And if you ever get a chance to watch some of the shit he did with ECW watch him close and you'll be able to tell that he's all fucked up.
Theres a lot of rumors around about his "reign" as NWA champ and his sexual preferences as well.

Tommy Rich held the title for less than a week and I recall reading that he was given the title because of a drinking bet made with a couple of regional promoters. I also read that it had nothing to do with booze and more to do with another oral activity.

I'm glad it addresses the fag rumor thats been around about him as long as I can remember. One thing, it says re: the crap-stabber rumor:
"It’s simply not true. Most of the rumormongers don’t understand just how much Rich was over at the time. Think Race would have dropped the strap to Rich otherwise? No way."
The problem as I see it with this statement is that a lot of guys were "that over" back then and never got the shot. Especially thru some of those soutern territories. Look at David Von Erich. He was ten times hotter than Rich on Rich's best day and he didn't get a look at that age. Not to say he would not have later if he hadn't died but they simply did push any early 20's guys back in those days.

Mean, you're absolutely right. Of the "young" faces back then David Von Erich was waaaay hotter than Tommy Rich. Difference being, each promoter pushed their own local guy, and Barnett got lucky they gave Rich a chance.
For the life of me I could never figure why Von Erich was pushed so much. A tall, scrawny, lanky kid with the big family name. Didn't get to see him much except a little on Florida Championship Wrestling and WCCW. He was big enough though that Flair was supposed to drop the belt to him prior to his death. Bary Windham was a hot young baby face back then but didn't get nearly the push David did. Jerry Lawler was a billion times more popular in the Memphis area yet I don't think they'd even entertain the idea of giving him the World belt.
Back in those days the titles were manipulated by a small core group (Dusty, Flair, Race, Brisco, the Funks)

Yep, that's the image they portrayed. Cool, muscle bound bro's. Squeaky clean... or so they tried to make you think. Unfortunately their family turned out to be one of the most tragic stories in all of wrestling. Lots of drug and mental issues. 1 O.D. death (David) and 3 suicides. Fritz passed on a little while back. Very sad. The arena the WCCW was based in, the Sportatorium, was recently leveled. The lone surviving brother, Kevin, is no longer involved in the biz and sold off the WCCW libraries to McMahon.

When Michael Hayes slammed the cage door on Kerry's head and cost him the match vs Flair back in '82 I was hooked.
Fish I don't think David ever really got that push, although up until he died he certainly got the biggest push of them all. He worked a program w/ Flair before he went to Japan and got into the "motorcycle accident" that killed him.

Ha! My measley allowance back then was used to buy PWI, The Wrestler, and Inside Wrestling every month. Nothing like those bright red bloody cover shots. I hated Apter and the publishers because they always had the WWF playing second fiddle to the NWA and AWA during the 80's. Being a fan in the northeast I could only see the WWWF/WWF shows. Didn't have much exposure to the other regions around the country. The local spanish channel did show "Lucha Libre" shows out of California where Chavo Guerrero Sr and a very young Roddy Piper were the main eventers.

Washed up, bankrupt, a foot cut off, bigtime addict, parents just divorced, three of his brothers dead and I believe Kerry was about to be federally arrested for violating parole and bringing in coke from Mexico. Unfortunately he thought a shotgun barrell in the mouth was the solution. Unbelievably sad that much grief could come over a family.

It's not definite, Hammer, but they certainly seem to be teasing Vince/HBK and as a general rule, not much happens between WM and the Rumble, it's all build up. So the logical place for that match to happen is at WM. Who knows though, after the other shit that went down at the Rumble its hard to figure where the company is going.
Edge w/ a cup of coffee title reign.
Mysterio winning the RR
A douche bag like Cena as the champ
Flair as the IC champ
Golddust?
Shelton Benjamins fat ass mama
If theres a direction here, who knows what it is.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe Vince is thinking of putting the strap on Mysterio with a "he did it for Eddie" angle. I don't necessarily have a problem with that but it has to be done right and with the two big titted shitheads running the show (Steph & Dusty) I'm not sure it can be pulled off. Also, they better have some spectacular shit on the undercard of Rey Mysterio is in the main event.

PC, after Edge won the WWE title a couple of weeks ago he announced he'd "have live sex" with Lita in the middle of the ring on the following day's RAW.
On RAW they setup a bed, and Edge/Lita started stripping one another outside of the sheets, and then taking care of the bras/undies underneath the sheets. Lita's boob inadvertently appeared quickly when the sheets raised up, but the USA camera's censored it fast. They pretended to do the dirty deed, underneath the blankets, and then Cena did a run in to break things up.

I want to see Ric wrestle as much as I liked seeing a grandfatherly Bruno Sammartino barely being able to get up from his knees and winning over Jim the Anvil Neidhart back in the late 80's. Talk about needing to put someone out to pasture.

Picking up a lot of tabs
5 or 6 divorces with every gold diggin bitch taking him over the hurdles.
I remember Bruno at the end.
Andre too.
Remember him and Haku losing the titles to Demolition at WM 5?
Andre could barely move. Never even got in the ring. It was the saddest thing I've seen in 27 years of watching wrestling.
It's a shame to see Flair like this because this is how a whole generation of fans are gonna remember him. Theres kids posting on this board who weren't even born when he had that program with Rick Steamboat in 1989, never mind the whole run at the top that started in 1981

Really?
I never heard that and in the interviews I've read with Steamboat he has nothing put praise for Savage. Are you sure your not thinking of Steamboats fued w/ Jake Roberts? Roberts hit Steamboat with a STIFF FUCKING DDT at a Saturday Nights Main Event taping at the Providence Civic Center in 1986 and Steamboat got a legit concussion. I remember it very clearly cuz I was in the crowd that night.
IMO, the Steamboat/Savage feud was the best the WWF ever had. And it all started that night with the bell and ended with that classic IC Title Match in Detroit. Vince, Stephanie, Dusty et al should look back at that feud and see if they can remember how to BUILD HEAT and PAY IT OFF because thats booking and in ring wrestling at its absolute zenith.
Did you know the WWF got sued for something that happened that night Savage nailed Steamboat w/ the bell?
When they're taking Steamboat out on the stretcher and he is flopping around like a dieing haddock on the deck of a fishing boat, he accidentally kicks a fan in the front row.
The fan sued.
The WWF settled.
I forget how much exactly but the fan who got kicked made out ok.

Hammer, Vince could've gotten that with Brock Lesner... and almost had him back in the fold some months ago. But both sides decided litigating in the court rooms is better than doing business with one another. I never thought McMahon would of let it drag out like this.

When Hart left the WWF and went to WCW he did a program with Goldberg.
I think the big match was at Starcade.
Goldberg went to give Hart a superkick and he legit nailed him.
Bad.
Bret ended up in the hospital with a Grade-Whatever-Is-the-Highest concussion and it ultimately ended his career. He had and still has trouble seeing. Balance issues. Memory problems. Headaches. Insomnia. A whole slew of other problems that came out of this and that kick is a likely contributor to the stroke he had not too long ago.

Going back some years.... Stan "The Lariat" Hansen effectively did the same thing to Bruno Sammartino with a sloppy body slam, and wound up breaking his neck. Bruno was "THE MAN" back then carrying the entire company on his shoulders. Took him almost a year to come back, had his revenge squash match against Hansen, and then Hansen was effectively blackballed for most of his career in the US.
You don't fuck with a company's golden goose. If Gunn did that to the Rock or Stone Cold (during the WWE's peak), you can only imagine what McMahon would've done to him. Does anyone remember the Red Rooster?

HHM, you have a point there. Back in the day the catalyst for most feuds & angles were an action of some sort. Something of substance, something visual that fans could grasp onto. A ringbell across Steamboat's neck. Damion gnawing on Randy's shoulder. Jannety through a glass plate window. A stainless steel water pitcher across Patterson's noggin. A hundred dollar bill being stuffed into a person's mouth. A luggie spit towards Superfly Snuka, or a coconut broken over his head, or Ray Stevens pile driving him onto the concrete floor (this instigated Snuka's turn from heel to #1 face).
Nowadays, just about everything is soap opera-esque. I stole your girlfriend. Your son is actually mine. I'm a bigger legend than you. I never got beat by you. My family runs the company and we will make your life hell. I'm prettier than you. My boobs are bigger. And so on and so on. McMahon has been on record for a long time in his want for the product to be a soap opera with its storylines.
I think what he doesn't understand if fans wouldn't mind the old style angle, as long as it was done right and done well. Basically you have to give the fans a reason to feel something for the characters, whether they're a heel or face. Hunter has "it", as does Angle, as did Austin, the Rock, and Mick Foley. UT and HBK are losing it, IMO. But for the rest of the guys today I don't really see it.
At least McMahon's making an attempt to develop younger guys into today's stars, which is good. For some it's working (Carlito, Edge, Orton). For some it's not (Masters, Conway). But none of these guys are capable of carrying the company as a main eventer. In essence, I guess I'm saying the problems go beyond the type of angles their writing committe are coming up with. The storylines suck. The characters suck. The tv shows suck. The ppv's a lot of the time suck (which in the past was practically unheard of). There's no competitive push from an opposing promotion. There's no reason to tune in, and the bandwagon crowd that spiked the ratings a few years back are tuning out. Overall it's all a very very lazy product right now. I don't think so much it's the WWE desensitized the audience with wild gimmicks, but rather they've lost touch with what their audience wants.

Could you elborate on "fake"?
Fake, by definition, means having a false or misleading appearance.
Every professional wrestling organization in existance today is on record as being in the business of "sports entertainment" They are governed by federals and state laws as such and are taxed accordingly. In addition to that, not one organization postures under the illusion that the outcomes you see on TV or at the arenas are anything but predetermined, and the athletes you see are paid, contracted performers.
Given that, please elborate on "fake", if you can.

Yep, it's scripted and they have to act out the match on their own. And yes, some people seriously get hurt as well. Those chair shots they take and the tables they go through? That's all real. Val has actually gotten a lot of tv face time lately, but only as a jobber. That's pretty much what he is now, jobber to the stars. He still has some pop with the audience, so McMahon is milking that in order to put over the new schmucks like Masterson and Conway.
Prior to that, Venis wasn't anywhere to be seen, on tv that is. I read on the rags he was relagated solely to dark matches for the longest time. Don't know why he suddenly dropped out of favor with the booking people.

Diamond Dallas Trash... What a piece of shit he was. F'n wife Kimberly was Super, Super hot though
The best thing about WCW - besides the Outsiders was this guy:
"I don't have 30 days and 30 nights, to show you why all the hoochies say there's nothing finer than Scott Steiner, but all I need is one night to have your wife call me for the rest of her life, the big bad booty daddy, so this goes to all my freaks out there, Big Poppa Pump is your hook up, hollar if you hear me."

The problem with those old vhs tapes is over a long time they will degrade and playback will be shitty. That's why it was awesome McMahon released all the WM's on dvd.
You know, he pretty much controls all of the tape libraries of the major wrestling org's during the past 20 years. All of the WWWF/WWF stuff, WCW, WCCW (Von Erichs), ECW, AWA (Verne Gagne), Jim Crockett Promotions (pre-WCW). I think the only stuff he doesn't have is Stu Hart's Stampede Wrestling up in Canada, and Florida Championship Wrestling which was run by the Grahams.
The WWE is putting a lot of this old stuff on their new 24/7 On Demand channel. I don't have it yet on my cable system.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply Terry Taylor hurt someone. Meant it more as an embarrassing gimmick the boss may stick a wrestler with if he's pissed off at them. Taylor went along with the role at that time, like a loyal soldier. But over time it's taken on a connotation of being punished.

YES!! That's was it. Geez, for all of McMahon's natural aptitude for stupidity, didn't WCW just come up with some of THE WORST gimmicks in the history of wrestling? For example, Vince's Gobbldygooker was just plain ridiculous. But the ShockMaster accidentally falling all over himself on the WCW show was sheer joy to watch.

Speaking of worst gimmicks.. Remember the gobbley gook - early 90's WWF?
I would say one of the best gimmicks was Pete Rose coming out dressed as the SD Chicken... only to find himself on the business end of a Tombstone piledriver by Kane

Captain Lou Albano!
how many wrestlers do you think he managed in his career.....can you name some?
did you also know that he had a heart attack and that now at age 73 he's like 150lbs...
I remember when he led the russian bear Ivan Koloff to the Heavy weight championship over Bruno Sammartino...

In recent times the worst IMO was Steve Regal as the "Man's man" coming out looking like a Village People cable repairman. I think that last about 2 RAW shows. Always wondered if Regal got caught diddling Linda to be humiliated with that gimmick.

Hammer my man! I can believe Lou had a heart attack. I can't believe he's made it to 73 and is 150 lbs.
Towards the end of his tenure with the WWF he was more know for being the manager of tag team champions. But as you noted, he managed big name wrestlers, like Koloff. Another singles guy he managed was the Superfly when he was still a heel. Probably the greatest and most popular heel to face turn, IMHO, was when Lou had Ray Stevens pile drive Jimmy into the concrete floor. And that was before the outside ring floors had rubber mats. The reason why I call it the greatest was because this was before kayfabe was broken, before it was universally known as sports entertainment. Many a fan still "believed" it was real. Snuka was a huge heel and hated with a passion when he first came in. Back then, if you were a heel everyone absolutely hated your guts, both inside the ring and outside. You were universally despised, even if you shopped, went to the movie theater, whatever.
So anyway, my point is for Snuka to have gotten into the hearts of the fans back then was something special. There's NO comparison to how they cheered for him versus how the fans cheered for the Rock.
Okay, back to the topic... some of the bigger tagteams Lou managed were:
Wild Samoans
Moondogs
Executioners
Valiants
The Blackjacks
Toru Tanaka and Fuji
Didn't he also manage the British Bulldogs?

Sports guy had a wrestling parallel in his running diary of the super bowl:
In the postgame show, after we hear from an emotional Cowher and MVP Hines Ward (hey, somebody had to win), Mike Tirico interviews Jerome Bettis (14 carries, 43 yards), who holds the trophy and stumbles through an endearing speech, finally announcing his retirement by saying, "I played this game to win a championship, I'm a champion, and I think the Bus, the last stop is here in Detroit."
If this were the WWE, the crowd would have cheered, Bettis would have held the trophy over his head, and then the Patriots' music would have started playing, followed by Belichick and Brady emerging to a chorus of boos, taunting Bettis with stuff like, "What's the matter, gettin' out while you can?" and "You're not the real champs until you go through us!" And then there would have been a huge fake brawl, followed by Bettis returning the following week for a tag-team match with Cowher as his partner.

Smackdown is also suffering from a horrible time slot (Friday night, worse of the entire week).

The Super Bowl ad is it was shown sucked.
Especially in light of the original. Candace is indeed a Goddess. Fish you still got that Hotel Erotica clip?
The whole WWF needs an enema right now.
See Lita & Edge for an example. They tease the breakup last week and follow thru on it this week? Assuming the actual b/u occurs tonight, you gotta tip your hat to the billion dollar princess and uncle Dusty for building up the heat for it.

I think the enema's gonna have to wait, don't forget we still got the Vinny tanning salon molestation incident yet to be made into an angle.

Remember when the WWF made a splash several year back with their first SB ad during the start of the Attitude era. I always looked at that commercial as a big factor into drawing in the new audience (along with the Rock, Stone Cold, and Mr.McMahon).
