there is still a possiblity that Ortiz could start at 1st base....Giambi may sit out

Big Papi may have to miss the game as well:

David Ortiz was selected as a reserve for the AL All-Star team.
It will be Ortiz's first trip the mid-season classic, and a well deserved one at that. The Boston DH is tied for the league lead in homers with 22, and is leading both leagues in RBI with 76. Despite being elated on being picked to the AL team, Ortiz may have to miss the game as his wife is expecting a child any day.

Looking at the starting lineups, does anybody else wonder if the AL has a prayer?

elsrbueno

The AL has a prayer, because it's the All-Star game and because both teams have incredible rosters.

The NL looks like it has the advantage, but keep in mind: Unless this game is a blow-out, the starters will have very little to do with the outcome of this game.

Hank Blalock beat Eric Gagne in last year's game for the winning hit.

The disadvantage for the AL is that they have 2 STARTERS who don't even deserve to go to the All-Star game (Giambi, Jeter)

I just wanted to make a note that Beltran isn;t really on the allstar team. He is selected as one, but he is not allowed to play. I dont really understand how that all worked out, but i think its pretty unfair.

i half agree half dont. as much as i hate to say it, jeter deserves to be an all-star/ as much as i hate him he has been on a tear, and we just have to accept the fact that he just may be one of the greatest shortstops ever

Greatest shortstops ever? what are you smoking? his defense sucks...and hes is an above average hitter...it just so happens that his team is always good every year and hes been there for a long time

dude, look at it from a non-red sox fan perspective. jeter is just a great player. how does he suck at fielding

Jeter- 139 errors in 1288 games
Nomar- 135 errors in 948 games
Tejada- 145 errors in 1016 games
Furcal- 104 errors in 587 games
Renteria- 167 errors in 1223 games

this proves that he is one of the best fielders in the game. end of story

see, if i was a yankee fan, i would have gotten no stats...

YanksHater,
Some people claim that Jeter makes less errors because he simply doesn't get to as many balls (thus, making them hits). Stats don't lie, and it seems that when Jeter gets to a ball, he rarely boots it. However, there's more to defense than just fielding percentage. Furcal in Atlanta gets to A LOT of balls that most shortstops don't even touch, and he gets a lot of his errors on the throws.....

YanksHater213
07-07-2004, 08:20 AM
yes, i agree with the tough plays. when jeter gets a tough play though he usually makes the throw from what ive seen in nationally televised games of them and vs. the sox. he doesnt boot the ball or throw it away when it goes to him, unlike nomar who boots a lot of balls and thows a lot away too. just because hes a yankee doesnt mean he sucks.

Speaking of Jeter and his fielding, who saw his "amazing" catch. I didn;t think it was all that amazing. He made a good hustle, but did he really need to go flying in the stands? Anyway, even with the flying, it still wasn't that great. I hate how on sportscenter everyone was like "No that is a true baseball player". You wanna see good fielding, look at pokey reese.

AMEN!!! i think you and i are the only ones who think that

Ortiz34
07-07-2004, 08:48 AM
yeah and who say pokey's catch about two weeks ago. i was like crying. He got like 6 feet of air and just snagged that ball. That is some true fielding.

elsrbueno

I also think that Pokey made a good catch the inning before Jeter did, but it wasn't as highly played because Jeter is well.....Jeter.

I listen to the games on the radio (no TV) so I have to go on the emotion of the announcers. Is there a video on the web of Jeter's "amazing" catch?

Back to All-Stars, Big Papi Ortiz was selected to participate in the homerun derby. Unfortunately, Jason "I Have Parasites and Only 11 Homeruns All Season" Giambi was biasly selected as well.

I hope Ortiz wins and Giambi doesn't even hit one.

Ortiz34
07-07-2004, 01:47 PM
yeah giambi is a homo. This is stupid, but dont worry. Giambi will do poorly, and ortiz will do really well.

elsrbueno
07-07-2004, 04:58 PM
Giambi's too sick to play in games, but is going to play in the Derby?

I sense an outburst from George about his one....

Ortiz34
07-09-2004, 02:53 PM
giambi will chicken out and drop out of the derby right before it. I just know it

elsrbueno
07-09-2004, 03:21 PM
I hope Giambi drops out.... Even if he doesn't....he doesn't have much of a shot to win anyway...

Ortiz34
07-09-2004, 04:24 PM
i kinda want to see giambi hit, and he can make a fool of himself. He will hit like no homeruns, and pull his hamstring during the homerun derby. haha

breaking news!!!! so close to the all star game and...GRIFFEY RIPS HIS RIGHT HAMSTRING!!!

Ortiz34
07-11-2004, 07:40 PM
yeah and isn;t he still like stuck at only 500 homeruns?

oh well, im still glad i get to see lance berkman in the HR derby, hes a great addition, player of the month for may or june? i forget which one...im also happy beltran gets to play, he was the lead vote receiver for the AL back in KC, but still, hes a great player

Ortiz34
07-11-2004, 09:29 PM
he deserves it

Zenny
07-11-2004, 09:56 PM
Giambi is not going to participate in the HR Derby. If all goes well, maybe Ortiz will start the All-Star Game!

yagmaster
07-11-2004, 10:39 PM
Is there any reason that he wouldn't? (I'm actually asking, not being a jerk)

Ortiz34
07-12-2004, 08:46 AM
yeah if Giambi is too sick to be in homerun derby, why should he start in the game?

Because he probably wanted to rest instead of participate in a HR derby.
