View Full Version : Yankees vs Mets 5/21

Small vs Glavine.
Small has been awful in relief so far this yr with an era barely under 9, but he was a different beast as a starter last yr. Big difference with him is that he isnt attacking the inside part of the plate like he did last yr. His stuff is not good enough to go away all the time. Glavine has been the man so far for the Mets, but the yankees own left handed pitching (11-2 this yr). Then again, the lineup the yankees have resembles the clippers lineup more than a yankee lineup, so stats can be thrown out the window.
The big question, though, is that if the yankees need a closer, they will be hard pressed to find one. Mariano and Proctor threw 3 innings apiece over the last 2 games and will likely be inactive for today's game. Farnsworth is achy right now with spasms in his back. If he can go tonight, then he'll close, but if he cannot go then we have a dilemma. Colter Bean was just brought up and has been great in the minors. I hope he is not the guy who closes, but who else do we have? Villone?- Maybe. Myers?-NO. Erickson?. HELL NO. Win or lose, I hope it is out of reach early...
ARod2212
05-21-2006, 12:15 PM
Hopefully Farnsworth is ok. Man we miss Sturtze . I would prefer to rest Mariano and Proctor for the important series, you know against Boston.
Let's just go out and hammer Glavine, and make it easy on Small and the bullpen.
Upper Deck section 25 baby! Can't wait.

tommy glavine is a huge favorite tonite and the over/under is 9??
considering the mets starter is 40 and cant break a pane of glass, the yanks starter is a career minor leaguer with an era around 20 and both teams bullpens, including both closers are shelved??
i think it should be a high scoring affair

He fought in the Vietman war which was the most pointless war ever. That war did nothing for our freedom as the US should never have even been there just like we are in Iraq now.
The Cold War was more of a damn threat than Vietnam ever was. Good I commend Hammer for being in the military but he still served in the most pointless war the US has ever been in and in no way did that war ever affect our freedom.

If they had signed him for 2yrs. at 14 per.. thats a marginal deal..
But at 4 years at 13 is just off the charts mismanagement. The reason the Yankees havent won while having a retarded payroll comes down to the fact of gross mismanagement.. whether thats Cashman or The Man behind the curtain..is up for debate.
The fact is, this franchise is a big bloated disaster.

What makes you think a 32 year old outfielder who is getting slower, losing range, and is suffering nagging injuries to his shoulder and foot will somewhat get better.
Face the facts. Damon posted a 25 FRAR rating his second year in Boston (career high) last year, it lurched to 14, this year it's slipped all they way to one. His .350 OBP is good, but is it superstar money? Not even close.

He still isn't worth 13 million dollars. His days of hitting 20 HR's are gone, his elite fielding status is gone, and his .350 OBP is good, but not superstar money.
But you are right, it is hard to say if the contract will be a bad one. I'm just taking an educated guess, that players get worse with age, and that Damon's nagging injuries will eventually overrun him. (ala Steve McNair)

It wasn't like there weren't warning signs with his bum shoulder at the end of last year, and his BA and BABIP away from Fenway during his career. Those numbers through one month line up very well with his AWAY splits from the last 4 years. C'mon now...

When A-Rod does get a hit to break a tie, or gets an early inning RBI, your quick to say, "he's still not clutch, it's only the third inning."
You should probably wait until the 7th inning to get on A-Rod for being clutch.

Are you ripping Lowell's defense? His defense has been spectacular. There has been 3 errors, but all came on turf surfaces. Now Arod... his "gold glove" is at 8 already

I have to admit, as much as part of me would love to see the Mets make this a laugher, the other part is glad this game is close. Don't get me wrong, I want the Yanks to lose, but if they could do it in a close game while using key BP members.........well, let's just say that the Sox loss wouldn't hurt so much going into tomorrow.

True, but so far the Yankees really havent used anybody(Except for Meyes but 2 batters) that they would use in a close game. Rivera wont pitch tonight and I'm pretty sure Proctor wont pitch tonight. The only guy they might use would be Farnsworth but only in a save situation.

Not entirely true. An underrated play from yesterday's game in my mind is the ball that Cano hit under his glove in the 9th yesterday. I know that Giambi obstructed his view, but a "nasty" SS stops that ball, prevents a run from scoring, and gets an out somewhere. I think that play deserves as much attention as Wagner's meltdown.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but Miller is an old Orioles guy. Sorry, but when you consider the fact that about 1/4 of the country's geography makes up the majority of the nation's media, and only about 1/8 of that geography is Yankee fans, and the Yankees are the most successful franchise in professional sports, then there is going to be a lot of excitement on the airwaves when they fail in big spots.

Do you get mildly excited when a Sox player hits into a DP with the sacks full and 1-out?
EDIT: I mean, don't get me wrong, I know he's no Yankee fan. But, watch Sunday night baseball for about 2 months straight. Miller gets excited for either side in a big spot, be it they scored the run, or made the out. He's, IMO, the best in the business right now, and I wish Fox could get ahold of him to do the Series.

I say Giambi K's, A rod GIDP's.
I catch almost everyone when the Sopranos arent on. Which means I havent seen one this year.
I watch just about every Sunday Night broadcast, and I think he's pretty fair. In a big spot, he shows enthusiasm not matter what happens, either the big hit or the big out (.....just like he did for Duaner Sanchez' attempted catch of the bunt). I wish Fox could get this guy for the Series.
