Braves exercise Cox's option
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves exercised the contract option on manager Bobby Cox Monday, keeping the skipper with the club through the 2005 season.

Cox is entering his 19th year with the Braves and 23rd as a big-league manager. He ranks ninth all-time and second among active skippers with 1,906 wins. He has 1,551 wins with the Braves.

Under Cox's leadership, Atlanta has won a record 12 straight division championships, posting five National League pennants and one World Series title over that span.

"We are very pleased to exercise the option on Bobby's contract for 2005," Braves executive vice president and general manager John Schuerholz said. "We feel that Bobby is the best manager in the game and his leadership has helped the Braves to set a very high standard of excellence - not just in Major League Baseball, but in all of professional sports."

Cox, 62, was the 2003 NL Manager of the Year. The Braves posted a 101-61 record a season ago, before losing in the divisional series to Chicago.

The Braves open their 2004 campaign on Tuesday night against the New York Mets at Turner Field.
