HIs first full season as a professional has been nothing short of amazing. Joba Chamberlain, 21, was selected in the supplemental round as the 41st pick in the 2006 MLB draft. At the time, teams admitted Joba was a top 10 talent, but shied away because he had a serious tendency to be overweight (some say he tipped the scales at 300lbs on more than one occasion) at Nebraska and also had a lingering tricep injury. But that didnt stop the yankees from drafting him and signing him. He did sign late though and only got one appearance in A ball before the season ended. But it didnt stop there. He was sent to Hawaii by the Yankees for winter league ball and absolutely dominated. In 37.2IP he walked 3 batters, while striking out 46. That was a harbinger of things to come as he started to get national notice on many baseball prospect rankings.

This yr, he arrived at camp in the best shape of his life. Sitting at 6'2" 230 lbs and looking thin as ever, he showed up ready for work. And there was talk that Joba might actually skip the lower A levels just like his 06 draft compadre Ian Kennedy eventually did. And they were right, Joba was to start the yr in Tampa, high A baseball, something typically reserved for guys who have at least shown they can handle the long season leagues first in A ball. But, Joba fell to the hamstring bug and ended up missing most of ST and the beginning of the season in Tampa. But he ended up recovering.

His arsenal is interesting to say the least. He's one of those special armed pitchers to come around once in a great while. A guy at 21 who can regularly light up the gun in the 98-99mph range, but one who also has impeccable control. His plus off speed pitch is his slider, which he can throw close to 90mph. He also throws a MLB average curveball and a changeup with plus potential (yet is considered to be average to below average at this moment). In terms of velocity, you arent going to find many guys who can throw harder than Joba. In his last start, he was clocked at 99mph 4 times, the last being in the last AB of his start.

Thus far, his stat line looks like this....

4-0 2.03ERA 7GS 40IP 25H 51K 11BB .181BAA 0.90WHIP

He will join Ian Kennedy, Jeff Marquez, Alan Horne, Jason Jones, and Brett Smith in the rotation (one will likely be promoted to AAA, most likely Horne or Smith). Good luck Joba the Hut.

that is a pretty sick name

he has a sick arsenal too.

He was throwing 95-99 all game, had the slider working, was mixing in a curve, and surprisingly was throwing a good amount of changeups. The change is by far the least developed pitch and it sounded like he was using it a good amount.

Joba Chamberlain making the jump to Double-A look easy

Double-A

On most night’s an outing like Jeff Marquez’ would have been the story of the night. But Marquez’ complete-game five-hitter was overshadowed by Joba Chamberlain’s even more impressive outing in his Double-A debut in the nightcap. In the second game of Trenton’s sweep of Connecticut Chamberlain touched 96 mph while showing the ability to command multiple pitches and work up and down in the zone. He struck out nine in five scoreless innings.

“I guess what (Chamberlain) did speaks for itself,'’ manager Tony Franklin told the Trenton Times. “I think you guys saw everything I saw out there, and it was fantastic. Basically, what I saw is a young man with a lot of talent, the ability to pitch, throw strikes and control the game. He’s got a very bright future. It was fantastic to watch.”
the radio guys said he got as high as 99.

an interesting article on scout.com about Joba Chamberlain. I wont bother with the link, you need to be a member to read it. But essentially, they are saying that Joba is developing his changeup throughout the season. His changeup was by far his least developed pitch coming into this season, but he has made it a point to use it. He says he throws bout 10-15 of them per game. The interesting thing is, Joba already has a plus plus fastball and a plus slider as well as a MLB average curveball. The results are good apparently, according to the pitching coaches, who seem to feel that he could develop the changeup into a league average or even plus change. What has already improved is his confidence in the pitch. He now has no qualms about using it in any count and to any location. While it still has a long way to go, that changeup could put Chamberlain in another world. Being clocked in the 97-99 range in the 6th inning of his start, Joba possesses an overpowering 4 seamer that he can locate throughout the zone and a very good slider, considered the best in the system. If the curve continues along its pace and then he throws in the changeup, he may graduate to the bigs with 4 plus pitches and plus control of all of them. This guy could be a force.

Joba takes home the best stuff award from the futures game.

BA

BEST STUFF; STUFF: Joba Chamberlain, rhp, Double-A Trenton (Yankees)

Chamberlain didn't make his debut out of extended spring training until May, but has dominated since then. The 2006 supplemental first-rounder was promoted to Trenton a month later where he's continued to dominate hitters with 48 strikeouts in 28 innings for the Thunder.

"We're talking plus fastball with good, late life to it and the secondary pitches were outstanding," another scout from a National League club said. "His slider was plus today; his curveball was good and his changeup was impressive too.

"He showed the best pure stuff in this game, and that might be because he's an advanced college pitcher. But he was an advanced college pitcher with a lot of question marks health-wise. He looks a lot better, his arm works fairly easily and he's got the stuff and the feel to pitch. The guy knows how to attack."

I was very impressed with his heater and his slider. But for the second yr in a row in the futures game, a yankee pitcher didnt locate well and gave up a run. His slider is amazing and that high FB in the high 90s explodes on hitters. The change was better than I expected as well. I dont remember if he threw a curve, so if he did, it mustnt have been all that different from the slider.

He didn't look really impressive at the futures game, but most of the pitchers get told they are going to the game, are given a chance to pitch in relief once before going, and then pitch their inning.

I don't think he threw a curve. He did look pretty impatient and excited pitching his inning yesterday, along with the control. I chalked it up to the event and it just being an inning, but you're right.

In Baseball America, they had a Minor League All Stars, I think all levels, and 3 of the 4 starters were Buchholz, Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy. Sox-Yanks isn't gonna dry out any time soon.

no kidding. It is nice to have a future!! This team had none about 3 yrs ago then Cano and Wang popped on the map and Cashman upgraded the minors. Its nice to use the money in that respect as well.

Speculation is that if he keeps it up, Joba may get a call this September. I'm not quite sure how much there is to this, or if I think it's even a good idea to bring him up this soon is his career.

Talking about the development. Chamberlain is moving up through the system much faster than Bucholz has

Here's the newest trade rumor floating around: Scott Proctor to the Devil Rays for Ty Wiggington. It then goes on to say Chamberlain would take Proctor's spot, converting him from a stud starter to big league reliever. Damn a skip of Triple A completely?
