Are you owed money back? We have it set up that almost every year we get a nice refund. Feels like found money.

Amazing how that psychology works. You give the government too much money during the year, and when they give it back to you, you feel like buying something to celebrate.

I am getting a refund. And I usually receive it just in time to pay my personal property tax.

Are you familiar with the concept of 'Tax Freedom Day'?

Vaguely maybe? Without coming across as too ignorant, is that the day when our amount of income tells us how much tax we owe?

I'm not sure what the point of it is though.

Tax Freedom Day represents the day in the year when you have finally paid all your taxes for the year - income taxes, sales taxes and property taxes. In Canada it comes sometime in mid- June for the average person like me.

What's the difference between that and putting it in a standalone bank account then using it to buy something months later? And don't say interest, U.S. bank interest rates are a joke.

Personal Property tax, aka legalized theft.

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't get what you're saying. I am paying income taxes and sales taxes all year.

It works like this: if one-third of your income is chewed up by the various taxes, your Tax Freedom Day would be around May 1.

It's just supposed to be a graphic way of representing how big of a chunk of our money goes to taxes.

OK I think I got it, and I think that's what I was trying to say in my previous post.

Got that right. I remember when Jodi Rell was running for Governor. She promised to eliminate the yearly car tax. It's a killer for someone like me who lives on Social Security. Finally a break after the income tax that was supposed to disappear, the Casino money that rakes in millions for the State. Yet it never happened. Income tax is still here, and it ain't going away. Car tax is still here, and the casinos are giving millions to the state still, but where does that money go? Politicians pockets. Has to. I don't see any tax breaks or improvements anywhere else. This state blows.

Oh. What floats my boat? Shady Glen cheeseburgers!!!!!

Hey ho! I'm right there with ya my friend, but I haven't been there in almost a year. Where in CT are you located? I'm only a 20 minute drive away from Shady Glen, over in Hebron.
