New York post suggests Varitek, Dusty Baker or Matt Quatraro.
If the Sox just go for it, Baker is the guy. But I would imagine Bloom will seriously consider his former Tampa employee Quatraro.
Varitek strikes me as a fan choice and nothing more...
I think Bloom will stay away from Roenicke unless or until MLB gives Boston some assurances that his name is not linked to the investigation. I think that is true for all the internal candidates.
Remember no one yet knows if the buck stops with Dombrowski or if higher ups get sucked in to this scandal.
Why from a long ago time do I recall Baker's name being thrown around previously for the Red Sox job? At that time, I think that it seemed as though Baker was just too old and too old school for most here. I think that Roenike gets his chance.
Asked whether he felt Cora deserved a second chance, Kennedy said, “I do. That’s my personal feeling. He does need to go through a rehabilitation process. What he did was wrong. He acknowledged it to us and apologized to us for that. But I’m a big believer in second chances and we all wish him well.”
On the same call, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom reiterated that when the team parted ways with Cora in January, it was for his conduct with the Astros, saying, ““It had nothing to do with what may or may not have occurred in Boston. That’s still the case.” Bloom stopped short of saying that he would hire Cora again, but did add, “My opinion of him is very high.”
While I think Cora will manage again, I don't think it will be in Boston. I suspect that some other team will pick him up about 30 seconds after his suspension has officially ended.
