Acquiring a bullpen arm is something all contending teams seem to do regardless of need. It's like a formal announcement of intention to contend...

LOL Very true.

Agreed. I think we have enough options internally to adequately cover second.

I wonder what the status of Marco Hernandez is. Is he expected back anytime this year?

Someone mentioned Marco on another thread, so I was just thinking it's been a long time since I've heard any sort of an update about him. Searched a bit on the SoxProspects forum, but couldn't find anything. Can't be a good sign...

if Marco and his defense were available for 2b i would not be so concerned with acquiring a 2bman....

I understand. If the bottom of our lineup can keep hitting decently, I think we're fine with what we have. Holt has not been bad defensively. I still think Lin should get a longer look.

I think the main issue with upgrading at 2B is that we just don't have the resources to do it.

I believe he's still rehabbing in FL. At this point, it's looking like 2 lost seasons for him.

We've got the best record in baseball. I'm fine to roll with what we've got. I usually hate deadline deals. You often trade away a decent prospect who could help the team for 5-6 years for somebody who may increase your WS chances from 18% to 19%.

Everybody's saying a bullpen arm. What's wrong with the bullpen? Looks pretty good to me. Kelly's currently in a funk, but he was great before that. Several good RP's in Pawtucket. Hell, I say we could trade away a BP arm or two (other than Kimbrel) and be fine. Not that I'm suggesting that.

Edit: I should add that since the second wildcard was added, winning the division is very important. With the Yankees neck and neck, if an addition helps to win the division, that would be significant. So this year, I'd probably be ok with deadline deals, but I'm still fine with sticking with who we got.

With the exception of Kimbrel, they are all humans and are therefore susceptible to injuries and fatigue...

Relief pitchers are like diapers for newborns - you will always need them

De grom is one of the best pitchers in baseball, the Mets need bats. Good bats.

Now that we have Pearce, we need to make a run at de grom. And yes, it will take quality to get quality.

Benintendi and bogey for de grom?

In the annals of bad trade proposals , this one will have a category of it's own.

Kind of a silly proposal. Giving away high quality and young field players for a pitcher, no matter how qualified is a road to oblivion. Starting pitchers play once in 5 days and can be fragile. Don't get me wrong, I would love DeGrom but we don't have what I would take to get him without giving up our future.

Need another ace .Benny for Degrom and Beeks and some flier for Mustakis .

You guys are done with trades. Pearce effectively brought you to the cap. Any deal going forward has to be dollar neutral

Toronto is paying part of Pearce's deal.

We may be able to get another team to do something similar, or we could dump a salary ourselves (like Pom, if he regains health).

moonslav59 has been making that last point repeatedly. Plus I agree our lineup if fine overall.

Why just one ace? Why not two or three? And don't forget trading half the Sox for Machado. You truly are the fount of great ideas for fixing this team.

It still falls just short of Betts and Workman for Kemp plus we take the whole contract....

From what I've read, Toronto is paying $1.5 mil of Pearce's remaining salary (roughly half?). It sounds like that would leave us enough money to get a decent reliever.

OTOH, Kemp is having a pretty good year this year...

Trading AB XB or Devers for DeGrom? And you boys call me delusional..........

Groome and ERod get u to the table. Lets not forget the Sox have some pretty good low level talent in Chatham Baldwin Cedroia.

Give Buttrey a call up! The K numbers don't lie and deal off one of the three stooges for better bench help. 3B for late inning defense is a must

Groome has no value. ERod for DeGrom makes no sense when they have similar years of control and the Mets are blowing it all up. The Sox may have some talent in the low minors as all teams do, but it’s not good enough to turn into trade capital

Betts is having a better one for a lot less money...

If it's $1.5 by Toronto and $1.5M for us, I have us at close to zero to spend and stay under the max line.

We can still make trades, if this happens:

1) We decide to go over the max and pay the penalties.

2) Get the team we trade with to pay enough cash to even out the swap budget cost by giving more than what normally might be needed.

3) Dump some salary of our own to create budget space for an addition or two.

Pro-rated dollars at the deadline (basically, 1/3 of 2018 salary):

$2.8M Pom

$1.4M Nunez

$1.3M Kelly

$800K Holt

$700K Thornburg

$600K Leon

Remember, when we trade for a player, we will only be on the hook for 1/3 of their 2018 salary, so that is all that will count against our budget (minus what the other team might pay). It looked like Toronto wasn't looking to save money as much as they were looking to get a better prospect for Pearce. Maybe similar deals are out there that might add nothing to our budget.

No value at all?

Come on!

Groome is the prototypical LH Pitching Prospect Teams drool over 6' 6" with legs the size of tree trunks. TJ will not scare anybody off. Its a Starting point for 30 year old starting pitcher who can dominate a Series.

Bigger ? is, what would the Yankees offer or perhaps Seattle and Arizona

Even before Tommy John surgery, 19-year-old Jay Groome was a long ways off with a 5.37 ERA and 4.9 BB/9 ratio in 17 starts in the low minor leagues. Even before TJS, Groome's prospect stock had dropped significantly from 2017 to 2018.

Other teams might have limited interest but the left-hander probably does not offer great trade value.
