Thread: The 2B position

    The 2B position

I know we've discussed JBJ and the C position a lot, they've both been bad, but the 2B position may actually be the teams weakest link and this is one position that has to be addressed at the trade deadine.

pedroia is a lost cause, I am not counting on him returning this year, or possibly ever. his injury is a tricky one, he's old (for baseball player) and as much as it sucks, hes probably done.

brock holt has been a pleasant surprise this year, and is a great team player and utility player, but he's proven he cannot handle the grind of being an every day player for a full season, he wears down and his career numbers decline every year. hes just not built to be an every day player.

then we have the guy getting most the reps, Eduardo nunez. nunez has been horrendously bad this season. he has a -.1.1 WAR, that is 3th worst in all of baseball behind only the great orioles duo of chris davis and trey mancini, and royals ss alcidies escobar. nunez is always bad on defense, but his offense has been equally as bad this year, and at this point, he hurts the team when he plays

what can be done about this shit show?

Maybe the Sox can swing a deal for Starlin Castro. Not sure how they'd work it out though if they're trying to keep their spending below whatever that threshold is.

What's wrong with Pedey's below market value contract?

The threshold is f'ked. And I mean the $237 million threshold. Can't get that much for a quarter billion these days.

We spent $8M on Nunez as a remedy for the Pedey situation. DD already addressed the 2B position, and he used up just about every scrap or resources we had to build the current roster.

I'm not arguing that 2B may or may not be our weakest position, but I think we are going to sink or swim with Nunez/Holt (Lin/Marco).

By the deadline, we'll know more about Pedey, and if Nunez/Holt are still not getting it done, perhaps 2B is where we look to upgrade, but by then, maybe another position looks like it is a higher need.

We only have a few precious resources left and can't fill all our needs. My guess is that we wait it out and make our decision near the end of July.

I would think this is the number one position to be addressed. The top 2 options are both either disabled or hurting. Hlt has shown himself to be a short-term success story, but a long-term weakness throughout his career.

The Sox don't have much to spend and can't afford to take on much money if they stick to their budget. But I would think upgrading 2B (and potentially some of the offense as well) would be at the top of the list...

May be the cheapest spot for a short term upgrade as well.

    Lowrie/LeMaheiu(sp?)/Dozier

    Bunch of options.

edit: It's LeMahieu, but I hope the Sox don't sign him because that spelling is going to be brutal for TS posters.

Dozier is obviously the marquee name there. LeMahieu is another good option, despite the Coors boost.

A very underrated name no one is mentioning is Asdrubal Cabrera. I'm not sure if the Sox can meet the asking prices for Dozier or LeMahieu, but I am pretty sure they can meet the Mets' price for Cabrera.

(Also, TS posters would avoid the problems with LeMahieu's name and just call him DJLM or something like that.)

Who would want him right now? He doesn't have much value at the moment.

With the abundance of FA's this offseason, it's hard to believe that the asking price will be outrageous for any of these guys.

Does it have to be outrageous?

When our best minor league trading chips are Jalen Beeks and Sam Travis, I think we run the risk of having players we simply cannot acquire...

Travis is not a good trade chip. I'd say the Sox have some good pen arms (like Buttrey), some high end lower level guys (like Mata) and decent org guys (like Ockimey) that are better than Travis. I think Beeks has decent value.

Brandon Drury for Groome and Mata.

Cashman has authorized me to offer this trade.
