wonder if it's team friendly the first few years a la the Stanton/Marlins contract? with SD having an eye to trade him before the really big $$$ years kick in.....
    MLBTR...

Machado will receive the $300MM on a fairly evenly spread basis, with the opt-out chance midway through the deal.

There are some key elements of the deal still to be worked out, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link). Notably, the sides have yet to hammer out terms on trade protection.

Would depend on interleague schedule year to year.

I'm also not sure the tax implications of Spring Training. Do they only get paid on a per game basis? Spring Training isn't included in that? Off days?

This is why I was an auditor, not a tax accountant.

PECOTA projection for Pads was 77-85 before Manny's news, how should be the projection after they signed Manny?

Dang, just when I started to have some faith in GMs not signing players to these crazy contracts.

All I can think is stupid, stupid, stupid.

I'll go on record predicting the Padres will regret this, depending on the opt out or not.
    Priorities:
    1. Yankees lose
    2. Red Sox win

Should be interesting to see if Boras can get a better deal for Harper. On the face of it , Machado is the better player of the two .

They're almost identical based on their career...ah, never mind.

White Sox fans are devastated, entertaining reading:
    http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php

The post, "Machado signs with Padres" is up to 859 pages:
    http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index....dres/&page=859

The White Sox are idiots. Basically, the White Sox offered Machado 8 years with two team options. Why would Machado accept that contract over the Padres guaranteed 10 year offer?

I'll go on record predicting the Padres will regret this, depending on the opt out or not.
I don't know. At some point, one of these 10 year contracts will work out for the team. This could be the one. The fact that Machado and Harper reached free agency at such a young age lessens the risk.

The Manny Ramirez contract worked out pretty well for the Red Sox (two championshps), but his contract was for 8 years, not 10. Still, Manny produced at a high level for most of the contract and Machado and Harper could do the same over a 10 year period.

I'm glad I don't root for the White Sox, what a train wreck of an organization.

The White Sox didn't offer Machado an opt-out clause because "the organization doesn't believe in that philosophy." How are they ever going to sign a top free agent?

The comments made by White Sox top brass should scare fans. Kenny Williams, the hoarder of the spotlight he was supposed to let go years ago, mentioned the Sox were not willing to meet the magical $300 million mark for guaranteed money. Instead, they wanted to lowball a superstar, offer dumb vesting options that probably had no real shot at converting, and did not offer any opt-outs. Oh, but they were super creative, right, Rick? Well, how creative can the team be when the organization doesn’t even believe in opt-outs.

Now do the Padres use their plethora of prospects to entice the Indians to trade Bauer or Kluber?

If only they hadn’t traded Kluber for Ryan Ludwick all those years ago...
