    Chris Owings >13th pitcher?

All season long Cora and DD stuck with 13 pitchers on the roster, but now there are 12, apparently because of a compelling need for Owings, the same guy who pretty much ensured the Sox lost the one game he started at 2b.

    Can anyone explain this?

Are you sure Owings isn’t a pitcher? He certainly hits like one...

I think the actual answer is that we now have a lot more off days on the schedule, so there isn't as much need for the 8th reliever. Plus September callups will be here soon.

The season is over, so it doesn't matter.

Is there a reason to keep a young kid down for those 3?

The day your eliminated is the day you give up hope. Just hope Cora sees this and screw resting players.
I'm with Slasher now 20 in a row baby.
Resting a player because of bad Pitching match-up, or injury, illness, or even a little slump one thing. Resting players when you have a chance even a little one because I want to give him day off at this time for a rest, sends me as a Fan a message.
Screw that. At least go down, with a good feeling for next year.

Yes, there are two big reasons, actually.

One is that the Sox still have a chance.

The other is that at this point in the season teams should still be trying to win games, for the sake of the fans and the other teams who are playoff contenders.

Cora is supposedly going into sprint mode. He is considering using his starters in relief roles on their non-starting days, thereby lessening the need for that 13th pitcher. He has not given up on the season.
