The real problem with the Sox minor leagues

The real problem with the Sox minor league system is the lack of really cool team names.

The Sox have 6 minor league affiliates, and 3 of them are called the Red Sox. How imaginative! Whose the farm system director - George Foreman?

And two of the other 3 are the Drive and the Spinners. Ok a little more creative, but no "Wow" factor. The closest thing the Sox have to a fun minor league name is the Sea Dogs.

Meanwhile, other teams have the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs and the Lansing Lugnuts and the Akron Rubberducks.

Why don't the Sox have a team name like any of the following:

    Mongtgomery Biscuits
    Batavia Muckdogs
    Vermont Lake Monsters
    Kannapolis Intimidators
    Savannah Sand Gnats
    Omaha Storm Chasers
    Quad City River Bandits
    New Orleans Zephyrs
    Chattanooga Lookouts

I get some of these have local flavor in their team name. But can't some local flavor or legend about Greenville, Lowell, Salem and Pawtucket to give them better names? I'll allow the Sea Dogs.

I mean, Pawtucket is the home of Hasbro, and nothing? Red Sox? C'mon!! There are some serious possibilities with Hasbro products alone!!

    Pawtucket Action Figures
    Pawtucket Lite-Brites
    Pawtucket Board Games
    Pawtucket Batteries (Batteries Not Included)
    Pawtucket Hungry Hungry Hippos

Heck, just the Pawtucket Toys works for me here.

    Thoughts?

The "Paw Sox" are moving to Worcester in 2021.

    Should they be named "Sauce"?

    How about the "Worcester Limburgers?"

Worcester Nipmucs? (Tribe that founded the place)

    Cupids? (Center of Valentine cards)

    Thumping Hearts? (See above)

    Monkey Wrenches? (Invented there)

    Wired? (Wire production)

    Power Looms? (production center)

When you say it's gonna happen now
    When exactly do you mean?

Worcester Polytechnic Institutes? (Working my alma mater in there.)

Worcester Cousy's? OK wrong sport. Worcester Tanyan Sturtze's?

The last baseball team in Worcester was called the Tornadoes, after the one tornado that struck the city in like 1953. Still, I'll take that over the Worcester Red Sox...

It was the strongest tornado in MA history.

Maybe shorten to Poly-Techs and it might work.

Modify Cousy to Koozees and maybe...

Well, MA doesn't have an extensive tornado history. That's an honor similar to having the fastest Edsel on your street.

But I would guess it was pretty bad, considering the books about it were titled "42 Miles of Hell" and "84 Minutes, 94 Lives"...

To shorten it, they would go with Worcester Geeks. Or Worcester Nerds.

Or, to keep WPI parlance, Worcester Gweeps...

I like "Geeks". Any ideas for the mascot or team logo?

Construction on Polar Park (planned Home of the Worcester Red Sox starting in 2021) halted, raising questions about timing of Triple-A team’s move from Pawtucket. Pawtucket mayor Donald Grebien doesn’t dismiss idea of extending PawSox lease at McCoy.

Okk but this does not solve the original problem in the OP.

Unless they unveil a new team nickname and logo, like "Welcome to McCoy Stadium: Home of the Pawtucket Blobfish"

I know it doesn't. I just didn't want to make a new thread about the WooSox potentially playing in the PawSox stadium for a year.

If I had to rename the teams:

    Worcester Spags
    Pawtucket Hot Wieners
    Portland Black Bears
    Salem Warlocks
    Greenville Blue Herons
    Lowell Spinners

Nice, but no WOW factor. We need some Iron Pigs/Sand Gnats style wow factor here.

Warlocks is good, except the team is in Salem, Virginia...

    That's why I didn't go with Witches.

Portland can't use that because of the University of Maine

Also, I'm biased but Hartford Yard Goats is an awesome name, and it ties in some history to the region

I had a spreadsheet of every MILB team on my old laptop. Wish I still had it. I would go through and list some of my favorites. The only ones that come to mind are the Amarillo Sod Poodles and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes
