One could argue he'd have done better in Boston without the money he was given to sign HRam, Pablo and others.

He showed skill in building the farm.

His downfall was the FA signings. Even his lesser ones bombed:

    Napoli II
    Drew II
    AJ Pierzynski
    Sizemore
    Rusney Castillo (IFA)
    HRam
    Pabloto
    Masterson

When you say it's gonna happen now
    When exactly do you mean?

While waiting on the youngsters to ripen in the minors, we still needed players and unfortunately for Ben not everyone can be a superstar.

He basically whiffed on every FA signing after his the Vic & first Napoli signing. His trades were okay. His IFA signings, other than Castillo, were very good, and his drafts were good, despite one unproductive one.

Maybe you can still join the Dock Ellis Fan Club. They’re always looking for members. Also, they’re always looking for 3-headed garden gnomes carrying vats of custard...
You heart breaker. not interested in Dock. Is the 3 headed garden gnome carrying vats of custard a west coast thing or what?

Re the Pirates the talk on MLB radio is that Pittsburgh may make a decision as early as Wednesday. Their thinking is that Ben's experience in Boston gives him the edge.
I'm sure that Ben coming from Boston had some appeal to Cashman. That said, there are any number of other Red Sox execs that Cashman could have tried to hire, but didn't. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Yankees farm system was not in the best shape at the time that Ben became available.

I think the fact that Cashman could stick it in Boston's eye was a major consideration. In any case it was ancient history. If Ben does get the Pirates job and can return that franchise to respectability and the playoffs it would be a remarkable achievement and truly propel him into the ranks of the premier GMs

He built a farm, but couldn’t manage a MLB roster. Seems like a MiLB coordinator type.

Even SoxProspects says that he struggled with roster creation and held onto too many assets.

As mvp has said many times, don’t call it a comeback.

And what I have said many times is that Cherington was not given the time to see his 5 year plan through to the end.

Also, part of his roster construction problems were named Larry Lucchino.

He constructed a pretty good 2013 ML roster by signing moderate FAs to shorter term deals.
