I'm guessing the offers they got for Eovaldi were dismal, ones that required us to eat a lot of money.

Also Bloom might not want to trade Eovaldi that much. Was it him who signed Eovaldi for the Rays?

He might also think we need a hard-throwing right hander in the rotation.

    I'm just speculating there, really.

Too late to non tender JBJ. Trading Eovaldi would mean we pay some of his contract, too.
When you say it's gonna happen now
    When exactly do you mean?

No shit. I didn’t want to tender him in the first place.

I thought they had a deal in place for him when the tendered him.

    I never expected this.

We could have reset by trading Price, assuming people are right about LA actually wanting him for $15M x 3 and replacing JBJ with a cheapy all glove CF'er.

We'd still be screwed losing Betts for nothing, so I think that's the real reason we decided to trade Betts and keep JBJ.

add another $17MM to that number. the 45% surtax for being $40MM over 2 years in a row if they didnt reset.

    Competitive Balance Tax:
Clubs that exceed the threshold by $20 million to $40 million are also subject to a 12 percent surtax. Meanwhile, those who exceed it by more than $40 million are taxed at a 42.5 percent rate the first time and a 45 percent rate if they exceed it by more than $40 million again the following year(s).

Isn't that just on the money over the $40M line?

Nope. It's just a Friday and I don't want to do any work today. My boss is on a plane back to NY, so I'm likely to get through the day without being hassled.

    208-228 mill rate is 50%
    228-248 mill rate is 62%
248 and over rate is 95%
