There was never much chance of that.

But how can they possibly beat the Twins in the playoffs?

    (except just show up...)

Looks like the Rays are their real nemesis.

Losing Kahnle while Chapman is down is a problem. If Chapman is the usual Chapman, our pen should round into form.

Yesterday was sheer mismanagement by Boone. Paxton had sucked coming into the start and threw 6 scoreless. Why run him out there for the 7th? And then why let him pitch to Lowe after allowing a 2 run dinger?

Stanton is one of those guys who just cannot stay healthy. How long until Judge joins him on the I.L. ?

Not sure you can criticize leaving Paxton in to start the 7th. He was mowing down the Rays up until that point (6 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 11K) and was only at 70-something pitches. The bullpen was gassed from all of those doubleheaders and games where our pitchers couldn't even go 4 innings so it made sense to try and squeeze one more inning from Paxton. After the 2 run HR I would've considered taking him out, but the next guy was a lefty so Paxton had the matchup advantage. Unfortunately it didn't work out. If he brings in Holder there but he doesn't get the job done then you'd be saying Boone is an idiot for taking out a left handed pitcher vs a left handed batter. Hindsight is 20/20.

    From Joel Sherman:

Giancarlo Stanton going down over the weekend with yet another leg injury merely corroborated the already verified — the Yankees are going to be spending most of this decade working around Stanton. With their roster structurally, and their payroll financially.

This is three years in three as a Yankee in which Stanton has incurred lower-half maladies. And these are prime years, ages 28-30. He is signed through 2027 and age 37. In 2020, he could not stay healthy in a shortened season in which he was exclusively a designated hitter and further reconfigured his body to avoid such breakdowns. This is the lamp breaking despite being in bubble wrap, swathed in blankets and handled with care.

This time it was a left hamstring strain. In 2018, Stanton played through a hamstring injury, persevering as others went down around him. He could not manage that last season amid the Yankee record spree of IL stints, landing on that list in April 2019 with a biceps strain and in June with a right knee sprain. He played through a calf injury in last year’s postseason that was still problematic enough that he almost certainly would have begun this year on the IL had the season opened as scheduled in March.

It began, instead, in late July, and by the second week of August, Stanton — first year in his 30s — is hurt again. He has seven seasons at $218 million left beyond 2020, which by itself would be the 16th-largest contract ever behind — among others — the 13-year, $325 million pact Stanton originally signed with the Marlins.

Well at least Ellsbury is finally gonna be off our books

I still think Stanton will have a productive Yankees career, but I don't think he'll ever live up to that contract.

Holy crap! These two guys are both built like Marvel super-heroes, but they are fragile as heck. Good call BTW.

It's hard to figure . Some guys are just prone to getting hurt . Ellsbury was as finely conditioned an athlete as you will find . But always injured .

Judge on the IL as well, although it sounds like he doesn't even have a grade 1 strain. The Yanks are playing it right. They've got lots of OF depth, so if a guy is sore, they can set them down for 10 days. Stanton, who knows. He has a grade 1, he should be back in 10 days, but you never know with him
    Hal sucks

Very good chance we are seeing the last swings of Gardner as a Yankee starter. Frazier is hot and it’s his time. Tauchman is just better all around at this stage. When Judge returns to RF and Stanton to DH, I can see a platoon of Tauchman and Frazier in LF

Lemahieu with a thumb sprain. He’s irreplaceable. Wade isn’t a bad backup and someone who’s deserved more chances than he’s received, but he’s no DJ
