Bracketed like college basketball's March Madness, with seeding per the 2020 draft order, the 2019 league-champion Washington Nationals and Houston Astros would receive first-round byes in the 30-team field.

Each match-up would feature a best-of-seven series with the winners advancing and the opening-round losers dropping into the consolation bracket.

Fans (and nonfans) can fill out their brackets at the office then cheer for the Cinderella team.

And the Seattle Mariners end their playoff drought.
So some teams get an extra 2 months of baseball in a short season? Nah.

All teams play four or five best-of-seven series. No regular season.

Not really since that’s just 2 teams. You’d cancel out 50% of the league after the first week.

Is that much different from the current format?

To be precise, opening-round losers play through the consolation bracket until the ultimate loser is crowned.

Championships since purchase by John Henry group: Red Sox 4 Yankees 1

The Red Sox are 8-1 in their last 9 postseason games against the Yankees.

Could be interesting. It would be different, that's for sure. With the randomness of a 7 game series, anything could happen.

I am happy to see that you considered the fact that this idea would require two teams to receive a first round bye.

Those first-round byes would screw up the consolation bracket.

Perhaps a 32-team bracket could be filled out with the two respective rosters from the canceled Futures Game. Could be a Cinderella team.

I have the Red Sox schedule loaded into my phone calendar. Every day it is depressing to get the alerts about the start of the scheduled games that have been cancelled.

    Impressive, nevertheless.

Not really. Anyone who's ever seen a high school wrestling tournament bracket could draw it up. Two teams would have first round consolation bracket byes is all that would happen; it would not be the two teams who got the first round bye sin the championship bracket, however.
The Yankees could go 0-162 and it wouldn't be enough

The proposed consolidation bracket would have each team -- win or lose -- keep playing until one team had lost five best-of-seven series.

Oh, I didn't think about the consolation bracket. +2 for you, -1 for me.
