Maybe Roenicke has seen something in practice. No one else is hitting in lead off and Devers is still out. What is he goinng to do?

Devers looks nothing like the hitter who continually improved from the second half of 2018 through last season. Injuries or weight issues aside, he is swinging at way too many pitches out of the zone, while pulling his head and missing strikes. There is no more approach to stay on the ball and take it to left with authority, and he looks befuddled, as if he keeps guessing wrong. Even his focus on defense has been inconsistent again.

Bottom line: Devers appears lost without Alex Cora. Reviving a young slugger who led the majors in extra bases is just another legitimate reason for the Sox to consider bringing back Cora. If they don't, don't be surprised if Devers is part of a blockbuster trade to revive the roster.

They're not going to trade Devers. That would be the ultimate freak-out move.

Championships since purchase by John Henry group: Red Sox 4 Yankees 1

The Red Sox are 8-1 in their last 9 postseason games against the Yankees.

    1. Don't trade players when they are struggling because the return wouldn't be as good as you need it to be.
    2. I think JD and Devers are both struggling because of the changes to how the hitting coaches can interact with players and the limited interaction with legal in game video.
    3. Also, this short season is really going to pronounce streaks both good and bad. The end of the year leader boards will probably look really weird this year.

The problem I worry about with #1 is that for guys who have won, sometimes they need a change of scenery to embrace new challenges. On the obverse, new players who haven't achieved a title goal often relish the chance to be part of a rebuild, hungering together for the ultimate payoff (pun intended).

Good point on #2; as for #3... JD hasn't really changed -- his swing is the same, doing damage on balls in the zone, flailing at off-speed stuff down and away. The guys who look lost mentally are Devers and Beni, but both are young enough to mature their games and hone their skills.

Unless you are a believer in that Arauz can maintain pace with Devers in RBIs over a full season...

It's hard to match him up.

San Diego, for example, has the pitching prospects in Mackenzie Gore and Luis Patino. But they also have 3B locked up with Machado for the forseeable future. And they can't move Machado to SS, where they have Fernando Tatis. And they can't move Devers to 1B, because they have a lot of money tied up in Eric Hosmer at that position.

The Dodgers have youn pitcing prospects, and might need a 3B for next season. But Friedman appears unlikely to move any of them.

The Nats could use Devers at 3B. But they have no pitching prospects worth considering in a deal.
