Thread: Clint Frazier

    Clint Frazier

The guys has been awesome since coming on to replace Judge. His offense has been top notch showing power and far more patience. Plus defense this year has really helped. He’s always had the speed, but he didn’t have the maturity to utilize his speed and skills in the right way to make the catch. He’d lay out when he wasn’t near the ball, take haphazard routes, get his feet tangled going back on a ball. This year, he’s worked his way into the Yankee plans, and with Judge, Urshela and Stanton coming back, Frazier has earned a starting spot with the Yanks. Boone has said he will be shuttling between LF and RF. I’d presume he’ll be in RF when he spells Judge (who likely will get the Gleyber treatment and play 2 out of every 3 games) and then start in LF the other games. Really nice to see him reach his potential.
    Hal sucks

WAR of nearly 2 in 33 games. Now has above average to plus defense. Became more patient, strikes out less (although still too much). Power has come on nicely. He’s finally reached his potential and you’ll likely see him in NY patrolling LF for the next five years

Nice to see him step up when given the opportunity. Good timing too since Gardy will be in a retirement home after this season.

Gold glove finalist. Wow. What a difference a year makes. Where’s our friendly troll now?

While it is a good thing that Frazier improved from looking like a guy that Scott Bakula quantum leapt into mid-fly ball to a guy worthy of this consideration, at some point we all know the Gold Gloves are the most questionable of the awards.

He is certainly a lot better than he was. And metrics support this as he is tied for 2nd in UZR for RF, but he has a couple advantages, namely the smaller RF in Yankee Stadium and that he played the fewest innings of any of the candidates...

The thing that never made sense was that he was considered a plus defender in the minors and then he was just out of his fucking mind in the bigs. Once he calmed down, he’s become a hell of a player. He will be in the more spacious LF next year, and I definitely know he can handle it. That’ll be a pretty solid OF if Hicks’ decline was sample size related. We will have a bigger issue if Hicks needs to be moved off CF

Frazier only played 28 games in the outfield, not even half the season. In contrast, Verdugo played 50 games in the OF for Boston. But using stats to nominate finalists brings some credibility back to Gold Glove Awards, which were much more honorable in the 1960s and 70s when peers relied on observation to choose a lot of worthies (and not all repeaters; 25 different OF GGs in the '70s).

Nobody can accuse the Gold Glove committee of lacking a sense of humor.

They also seemed to prefer better hitters...

Less than half his games at the position? I've seen this one before:

Clint Frazier is going to be pointing his finger at congress and wearing earplugs during games sooner than later.

He handled 29 plays in his zone, per fangraphs, and 22 OOZ plays. But when he played LF this year, he saw only 11 plays in zone and handled 8 of them, with only 3 OOZ plays made.

So either his range increased dramatically in the smaller RF, or he lined up closer to the fringes of his zone a lot in RF, which he might have done at any time when there was a second baseman standing in shallow RF.

I'm saying he might be a Shift Benefactor...

Frazier's UZR/150 in left field this year was -67.8. Just sayin.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Small sample size. But so was his sample size for right field.

If you watched Frazier from this year to last, his issue isn’t that he lacks range. His issue was that he took the most circuitous route to the ball. This year, his routes were really solid, something he’s been working on all year. They’ll need to keep working with him clearly, as LF in YS is no joke. But he’s improved defensively, his offense hit another level and he finally looks like he belongs. He is set to have a great 2021
