You're right. Calvin Shiraldi was the Sox pitcher who collapsed, getting the first 2 out and then giving up singles to Carter, Mitchell and Knight...

A couple of interesting facts about Schiraldi in that game.

1) He actually blew the save twice, having giving up the tying run in the bottom of the eighth.
2) He pitched 2.2 innings and threw 55 pitches. By today's standards, McNamara left him in way too long.

Baseball is a funny game . Calvin gave up three straight two out singles . Any one of them could have been hit a little harder and been caught . His whole legacy would be different. Sometimes you can catch a break , sometimes you can't.

A-rod was not going to the mound; he was just pissed for being hit. "The Captain" took a cheap shot. Catchers ordinarily just stand in the way if that happens.

A catcher should stick up for and protect his pitcher. I have no problem with that. In fact, I'm on board with it. IMO, it was not a cheap shot by any means.

And it is also possible that Bloom is waiting to see if DD (or whoever, really) gets the Angels' job and fires Maddon, who is Bloom's former manager, and whose name does carry sufficient PR weight. (Chicago hired him solely for that reason, even firing newly hired Rick Renteria to accommodate Maddon.)

The one point I would find makes very little sense is passing over Gibbons solely because it was an interim position. If Gibbons was the guy he wanted, there is no point in waiting it out, especially since it leaves the possibility of Gibbons getting another position elsewhere. If he actually liked Gibbons, he would very likely already be here...

OMG. No to Gibbons. That would be bad enough. If we hire Maddon, I may seriously have to find another team to root for.

Arguing whether is was a cheap shot or not is kind of missing the point.

Whether it's true or not, that incident was credited with helping to turn the 2004 season around for the Sox. They had lost a tough one to the Yanks the night before, and they were losing this game. They were not playing well. And this was the game in which Mueller hit the home run off Rivera for a stunning Sox victory.
