Leaders of the 04 Sox (aka the Idiots):
    Millar
    Papi
    Manny
    Varitek

Schilling was just a guy. A loner.

Well, there aren't any pitchers on your list.
Championships since purchase by John Henry group: Red Sox 4 Yankees 1

The Red Sox are 8-1 in their last 9 postseason games against the Yankees.

Nope. I thought about putting Pedro on there, but went with Varitek instead.

Just because someone had the best starting pitching staff doesn't make them the "leader" of the staff or the team IMO.

I don't know if Schilling was a leader on that team, but he was sure as heck a winner.

And as much as I love Pedro, Schilling was clearly the ace that year.

It was strange how Pedro's worst season up to and including 2005, was 2004.

Schilling carried us all season and into October.
When you say it's gonna happen now
    When exactly do you mean?

I don't believe that makes him a "team leader" though. He had a great regular season for sure.

I saw Millar and VTek as being the top leaders. The team had plenty of leader types.

Pedro's "stuff" really took a nose dive when he hit 32. Was it due to conditioning or smaller frame? Hard to say.

"The Yankees are my daddy" was not a great moment of leadership by Pedro.

But they didn't win until Schilling got there. His presence and attention to details, pouring over notes with Varitek, at least brought another element. To me, Schilling's work ethic at least set an example for teammates, similar to JD Martinez' influence when his first year also brought a title to Boston.

When he left the Sox, I think I remember someone writing his "arm was hanging by a thread."

BTW, he still finished 4th in CY at age 32, his last season with the Sox and started 31 games his first season with the Mets, while leading the league in WHIP in 217 IP.

It was really like age 34 that he nose-dived.

I agree his acquisition put us over the top, but that does not prove he was the "leader."

Reggie Jackson put the Yanks over the top, but he was no leader.

Pedro was a classic example of the Branch Rickey philosophy "Better to let a player go a year too early instead of a year too late"...

If you look at our ring seasons, they all seemed to coincide with the recent (1-2 years) addition of a second "ACE."

    No ring, until Schill.
    Second ring until Beckett.
    Third ring until Lackey.
    4th ring until Sale.
