The Red Sox could suffer long-term negative consequences by spending up to the CBT limit in this pedestrian free agent market.

BTV has Kiermaier at -9.7 and Fairbanks at +9.4.

I'd give Chavis (7.5) and Chatham (1.9) straight up for the both, but if we could get TB to pay a little cash, it would be nice.

    That's 9.4 for -0.3.

If we don't go over, the clock does not start, again, and if no deal are longer than 3 years, it can't get too bad. (many are 1 to 2 years.)

    Or not.

Easy enough to stay under the limit. Lots of contracts coming off the books in the next two years: Pedroia, Price, JD, Eovaldi. That's 64M AAV savings.

We really don't lose much after 2021: Pedey & Barnes. Rising Arb costs might eat all those savings up.

Clearly, the biggest part of the savings was after 2022, but I was just saying that you can stay under the CBT even if you get really close this year.

Also, we have NO idea what the CBT will look like under the new CBA. Current CBA expires this year.

Good point. There may not even be a Lux tax anymore.

If I'm running Tampa, I would rather have Kiermaier and Fairbanks - a starting CF and a closer - over two utility infielders..

I bet there will be, I just think it will be higher and/or the penalties will be much less severe.

Pretend you are the Sox GM and you have $36M (per year) to spend on the following players. How would you spend it.
(For advanced players, assume we can spend $55M and stay below the second tax line.)

    Assumed high need areas:
    SP: 1-2
    RP: 1-3 (including a closer)
    2B: 1
    CF: 1-2 (4th OF'er)

    SP:
    $13M x 3 Tanaka
    $13M x 3 Odorizzi
    $12M x 1 Kluber
    $10M x 1 Paxton
    $9M x 2 Quintana
    $8M x 2 T Walker or G Richards
    $6M x 1 JA Happ
    $5M x 1 Lester or Porcello
    $4M x 1 Cole Hamels
    $4M x 1 Archer
    $3M x 1 Martin Perez

    Closer:
    $10M x 3 Hendricks
    $7M x 2 Hand or Rosenthal

    RP:
    $6M x 1 Colome
    $5M x 1 Yates
    $4M x 1 Melancon
    $3M x 1 A Bradley, S Greene, J Jeffries

    2B:
    $14M x 1 Semien
    $8M x 2 K Wong or La Stella
    $7M x 1 Profar
    $6M x 1 Cesar Hernandez
    $3M x 1 Schoop, B Miller or E Hernandez

    CF:
    $8M x 2 JBJ
    $4M x 1 Pillar
    $2M x 1 Marisnik

Odorizzi, Lester, Hand, Yates, Kike, Marisnick... the latter two are placeholders, the four pitchers are to hold my hair in place (what's left of it).

    And more physical.

If a team goes over the third limit for a second season, Manfred gets to shave off the GM's eyebrows...

With the owners crying pandemic-related poverty, the CBT threshold might remain the same or even go lower.

    Or not.

I hope they set a minimum bar and penalize or withhold money from teams that fail to spend a certain amount.

I'm fine with the Lux Tax at about where it is, now.

How is the virus going to impact the new cba negotiations?

A ton of money had been lost in 2020 and a ton will be lost in 2021.

This is not going to be pretty!
