I would argue that the Red Sox have gotten worse. The pitching hasn't been enhanced at all, and the offense only marginally so. We can't just go around assuming that E-Rod and Sale will be their normal selves upon returning. TJS is a hit or miss in terms of returning to prior production, and even before E-Rod's heart condition and COVID, I felt that 2019 was a career year for him that would be hard to replicate.

This Sox team today is worse than the 2020 Sox? How? Which loss of a player is affecting that? JBJ?

Well how are they better? Biggest acquisition to this point is Renfroe and he doesn't exactly change the course of the franchise

Sale and ERod gave us zero in 2020, so they can't really get worse, unless they both pitch at a 5.50 ERA or worse.

Losing JBJ and gaining Renroe looks to be a minus, but who knows how well or poorly JBJ will do in 2021.

Let's have this conversation after we add a few more players.

How are the Rays and Yanks better, as of right now? At worse, we gained slightly on both, so far, even if by getting worse by less.

To me, they have gotten worse by more than us replacing JBJ with Renfroe.

The Yanks replaced Tanaka, Paxton & Happ with a guy coming off a major injury- Kluber.

    The Rays lost Snell.

We will be spending over $20-25M, soon. They are both about done spending.

The Jays improved but lack a solid rotation, even if they all do as well as can be expected.

    And Morton.
Championships since purchase by John Henry group: Red Sox 4 Yankees 1

The Red Sox are 8-1 in their last 9 postseason games against the Yankees.

    Indeed.

It appears most of the AL East is getting worse. If we do spend $20-30M more, we should gain on everyone, even if just slightly.

A lot will depend on heath and rebounds, but we don't need everyone to stay healthy and/or rebound- just 2 or 3 out of the 6 to 8 in that category need to play well for us to gain significantly over every AL East team, except maybe the Jays.

Just 20-25 total GS'd from Sale and ERod combined could be a major boost over 2020.

It's not a big stretch to 2 from imagine Devers, JD and Beni to return to 2018 or 2019 form.

One can even imagine Bogey or Verdugo going nutty great in 2021.

It's possible Dalbec competes for ROY.

DHern could finally lower his BB rate. Taylor could return to 2018-2019 form.

    Maybe Eovaldi starts 25 games.

Lots of ifs and maybes, but almost every AL East team has as many as we do.

Which of those is actually better?

I know there is a lot more to a team than a starting rotation, but bear in mind this is what we consider the Sox biggest weakness. Also the Jays' as well...
And the Blue Jays have just signed Brantley:

It was a package deal due to his friendship with Springer.

Still a chance they sign JBJ. But they do still need a quality starter . And as I have been saying for the past two years, they absolutely have to bolster the bullpen. So many games come down to the bullpens these days , and that doesn't look like it will change anytime soon.

So I guess Barnes was not good enough friends with him?

I was hoping we get a solid closer and set up man. It looks like we may not get either, unless by trade.

We better get Odorizzi to lessen the pain of not boosting the pen by as much as we had hoped.

Rotoworld says deal isn't done, but the answer to your question is: I guess not.
