Especially after the two polls the AP, and the Coaches poll had Fla State in the top 4 also. Like I keep saying deciding who gets in by a bunch of guys in a smoke filled rm is a very flawed system, but then again college FB has always flawed. I still remember back in the day when ND jumped from 5th to ist after winning a bowl game.
Yes, that was my freshman year at ND, when ND beat #1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl. The #2, 3 and 4 teams were committed to other bowls. There were 4-5 teams that ended up with 1 loss.
It seems to be a long standing tradition that beating the number one team means more than anything else, despite the fact that that #1 team usually drops to #4 to 6.
In '73, ND beat Alabama and the polls split, because one poll did not update it's national champ after the bowl games.
