Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico)

It was the final week of the regular season in Puerto Rico before the playoffs begin January 4. Chase Shugart (pictured) threw three clean innings with three strikeouts across two appearances, pitching for Mayaguez, while Juan Montero appeared exclusively as a defensive replacement behind the plate for Caguas. Big leaguer Christian Vazquez has been playing first base and designated hitter for Santurce to get some at-bats in and was 4 for 22 on the week, with two runs, two RBI, a pair of strikeouts and a walk.

There is one more day of regular season play before the postseason.

Panama Professional Baseball League

The league has entered the final week of its regular season before the playoffs begin January 11. Jonathan Arauz has slashed .200/.286/.240 across 25 at-bats so far this season, while Eduardo Vaughan has hit .242/.359/.364 in 33 at-bats.

Arauz isn't getting any better. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets DFA'd in a roster crunch.

@SoxProspects

The Red Sox have re-signed OF Johan Mieses. The 26yo split '21 between Portland and Worcester (and the DR national team), hitting 19 home runs across the two levels plus 4 more in international competition. He'll compete for a spot in AAA after some struggles at the level in '21.

I like this order better than soxprospects.com, but I'd have Mayer 1st.

Within: The Red Sox have now hired Katie Krall as a minor league coach, making the Sox the first org with two women on their coaching staffs. Bianca Smith: “That’s going to be history in itself…It’s kind of sad that it’s still a big deal, but we’re both really excited about it.”

It does, but so does upside potential.

It's not a clear choice.

Q: will these kids still get to play on time and develop this year, even if the grown-ups can't decide how to split up kajillions of dollars in the (No)-Show?

They should.

Let the Worcester Sox play in Fenway!

MiLB offseason and regular season are not severely impacted. Only players on the 40 man roster are impacted.

MiLB regular season will start on time even if their is no new CBA in April

Looks like we spread out our spending rather than go all in on one guy- like the Yanks did.

I hope this works. We need to get back to the days of meaningful IFA additions happening regularly.

On Yorke:

"He's potentially a double-plus hitter with average power who can stay on the infield"

If he can stay at 2b, that is the biggest win for this org.

Posted
Mayer 15

Casas 19

Yorke 31

Duran 91

Yanks:

Volpe 10

Peraza 55

Dominguez 87

I'm waiting for jacksonianmarch to say how these ranking are full of s***.

It would be great, if he can stick at 2B, but if his hit tool becomes as great as it looks like it might, we can find a spot for him anywhere, even at DH, that will help the team.

I have never been a big fan of the projection middle infield HSer. They fit in 3 categories. They’re either 5 tool studs who go top 10, really amazing offensively and they’re not really middle infielders, or defensive whiz’s with a lagging bat. This kid isn’t the first category as we know. Maybe he works out. Maybe Bloom sees things differently. But this looks like a reach where some more upside or more polished players were available. For the first time in awhile, I like our first rounder better than the Sox.

He's referring to Austin Wells, a beefy C who isn't great behind the dish. Maybe he sticks there for a while like Gary Sanchez, but he has DH written all over him without Yorke's hit tool.

Posted

I still like Wells. He looks like a Schwarber type who will probably stick behind the plate early in his career as a backup while getting starts in the OF and at 1B. I was not expecting Yorke to tear it up like he did. The rankings are the rankings. MLB has Dominguez in the teens, Gil at the back end and Volpe and Peraza similar. They’ve got Duran in the 20s and Yorke in the back end of the top 100.

I’ve said before and I’ll say again, Sox system is top heavy. This doesn’t change that perception. It won’t be for long, though. Bloom is a builder and better suited for today’s game than our GM.

@SoxProspects

A day after Baseball America's 2022 top 100 prospect list came out, Baseball Prospectus releases their Top 101. The same four Red Sox made the list.

-Marcelo Mayer (17)

-Nick Yorke (40)

-Triston Casas (44)

-Jarren Duran (81)

Being top heavy is not a bad thing. Most of the very best players come from the top 90 or 100.

We do drop off quickly after our 4th best prospect, but we have a lot of hopeful prospects that might deliver 1-2 to the top 100, maybe, after the 2022 season ends. (Duran will graduate from prospect status.)

I'm not disagreeing that the Yankees farm system is pretty good. I just think the value for their prospects tend to be a little overinflated.

I agree.

I'm not sure if the greater depth in the Yankee system outweighs our top heavy advantage, but I don't think jacko can blast our farm, anymore.

Thanks Bloom & DD!

Your farm will be deeper than ours in 2 years, IMO. Bloom has knocked the first pick out of the park two years in a row. Cashman seems to make most of his hay on the INTL market and in the mid rounds with collegiate pitchers. Eventually, the better drafter will win, especially if an international draft is instituted

Our last 3 first round picks have been great:

Mayer

Yorke

Casas (DD)

How do you think Cashman's strategy will work out if they institute an international draft? Will that be better for the Yanks? Worse?
