Carlos Martinez had a rough debut with Worcester:

Starting to notice some uncanny similarities between the Bloom years and the Cherington years.

Year 1 - Total disaster, which most agree is not really their fault.
    Year 2 - Surprisingly successful.
Year 3 - Shockingly bad. Insulting lowball extension offer to homegrown star. Selloff of big names at deadline.

The Red Sox are 8-1 in their last 9 postseason games against the Yankees.

Man, Bloom had to put together a pretty deep roster for Cora to be able to maneuver his way into that Plawecki matchup in the 9th yesterday.

Now, if we keep playing like this, then we'll be 12-18 out by Memorial Day, and you could be right, but baseball hardly ever goes as many think it will.
The problem is you need 8 of the 10 teams ahead of the sox to fail while the sox improve to get one of the 3 WC spots.

It's like being 4 strokes off the lead in golf but there are 8 guys that are 3 off or better.

The 7th place team is 14-13.

It's the 6th place team that would be hardest to pass (TOR, now, at 17-13). We are 6.5 behind them.
Not really, many of the teams ahead of us are around or below .500, so if they continue, as is, and we do better, we'll have just one team to beat.

My point is that it is harder when there is 10 teams ahead of you for 3 spots.....

The only team the Red Sox have to worry about beating at the moment is the O’s.

I disgaree. If we win enough to pass Toronto, none of those other teams will have passed them, too.

Just my opinion. The White Sox may pass MN, but I doubt MN ends up ahead of TOR (or TBR), but that one might be too close for comfort.

I'm not saying we will do it, but we'd have to win a lot of games to pass the 6th place team. I just don't see anyone else below TOR making a similar run, and I'm not sure MN is for real.

Yes, one game at a time.

Every winning streak or stretch starts with one win.

Just beating the orioles isn't going to get you a WC spot.

You can disagree all you want but it's a fact that it is harder to pass 8 teams than it is to pass 7, or 6, or 5, etc.....

It's true in golf and it's true in playoff chase. Maybe Moon has never played golf.

You don't want to pass 10 guys on the leaderboard on Sunday.

What happens is Toronto may falter a bit but teams above may do the same. Which means some teams other than Boston is making up grounds. Catching Toronto may not get the job done. Another playoff contender probably will appear.

It's hard to see how this team can mount a charge when the offense is this abysmal and seems to be getting worse, if anything, and there are no real reinforcements of any kind expected from anywhere.

We don't even have any guys injured that we can say "Wait till he gets back!"
