    They didn't really lowball Betts.

What can we do, right now?

    Make Houck the FT Closer.
DFA Brasier & add Casas to the 40 man roster.
    Promote Duran to MLB
Start Cordero & Duran in LF and Verdugo in RF
Use Cordero at 1B, when Dalbec sits.
Option Danish to AAA- call up Seabold
Option Sawamura to AAA- call up Winckowski
(When Wachsa returns, demote the worst of the two just promoted)
Wait to call up Casas until he earns the xtra year of team control. (Think long term)

Promote Bello, Walter and Granberg to AAA.
Promote Van Belle, Rafaela & then Binelas (once Casas is promoted) to AA.
Consider promoting Hamilto to AAA and Northcut and Lugo to AA.
Consider promoting Mayer, Kavadas and Paulino to Greenville.

Nope. They offered 10 years and $300 mill. He got 12 years and $365 mill with a lot of deferred money. The difference between those two looks pretty negotiable.

The story is that when they offered the $300 mill Mookie countered with 12 and $420 mill, and that was the end of it. The Sox then signed the extensions with Sale and Bogey.

    Not really.

Reportedly, we offered $300M/10. He took $365/12 ($110M deferred).

He basically got 2 more years at about the same $/yr.

It might not have been at the insult level of lester/xbo offers, but $65M is a big chunk of change.

$110M is deferred, which translates to a lot of lost money, as it does not gain any interest for over 12 years.

All-in-all, it's pretty close. You can make a lot of money on cash in hand years one to ten.

I don't think I can every get myself to bash Henry, but that would hurt- bigtime.
Unless things turn arund soon, Bogaerts won't be here in August.

St. Louis (26th in SS fWAR) looks like the most prime suitor, since DeJong did not work out and they are getting virtually nothing from the SS position, despite being only 2.5 GB from Milwaukee.

BTV has LHP Matt Liberatore ($23.7mill) with roughly the same surplus value as Bogaerts ($23.4mill). Liberatore has yet to make his MLB debut, but pre-2022 was ranked between 40 and 65 by the three biggest prospect ranking polls. He is a former first round pick taken at number 16 by Tampa, a pick made by Chaim Bloom.

Now Bloom did trade him away for Randy Arozarena. Not sure if he wanted Arozarena that badly or lost his fascination with Liberatore (or both). But I could see this happening if things do not get better in Boston.

Losing Bogaerts will still be a big deal and a tough blow, but there might be at least some compensation..

    1. Are we sure losing Betts at $365M/12 was a total loss?
    2. Why not mention the players we let walk that ended up being good ideas? (not all "homegrown:" Pedro, Damon, Ellsbury, Porcello as well as players we dumped via trade: Price, CC, Beckett, Manny...)
    3. We have not lost Devers, yet. (I believe we have lost Bogey, though.)

See, if I was an ignorant Yankee fan only coming out of my hole to troll on a Red Sox board because my team had one great month, I could do the math and say, Look, LA gave Betts over four hundred THOUSAND dollars more per year... that's at least half of MLB's minimum wage for a first-year player. Oh.

We may end up trading Bogey, even if we do turn things around. (Yes, I just said that.)

I'm not saying we do, but it's possible.

It would be an odd move, but not an unprecedented one.

But if you do move what is essentially your best player in a playoff hunt, you better win it all if you plan to avoid lots and lots of negative PR...

Ask any financial advisor, if they'd raher have $300M over 10 years or $365M spread out until 2044, they'd all say take the upfront money and invest it. He'd end up with way more than the $365 would get him.

Pretty close to unprecedented for the Red Sox and other big market teams.

The only thing resembling an exception for the Sox was the David Wells trade in 2006.
