Thread: Juan Soto sweepstakes

    Juan Soto sweepstakes

Soto just turned down a 15 year $440 mil offer from the Nats. That would have been the largest contract extension EVER and it wouldn’t even be close. Betts’ 12 year $365 mil contract stands as the largest contract in terms of dollars ever doled out. Soto would have beaten that by $75 million.

It stands to reason that Soto wants out of Washington. And now the Nats are expected to move him. So, build a package to get Juan Soto for the rest of this year plus two more seasons.

    For the Yanks….

    Nestor Cortes Jr
    Anthony Volpe
    Ken Waldichuk
    Austin Wells
    Hal sucks

BTV gives Soto a surplus value of $193mill.

A package of Cortes, Volpe, Waldichuk and Wells have a combined surplus value of $94million.

The site does confirm that this offer is nowhere near the ballpark.

And for Soto, if you are comfortable giving up the package, it is not enough.

I don’t think either the Sox or the Yankees can put together a package to acquire Soto. A package of Mayer, Casas, Yorke and Bello, for example, only combines to a surplus of $149mill. And that easily tops the Yankee offer.

Both the Sox and Yankees would also find it very difficult if not impossible to retain Soto while also losing other star players, namely Devers and Judge.

So simple question - is the upgrade from Judge to Soto worth the top 4 Yankee prospects? (I don’t think they will care about Cortes. I know I wouldn’t trade my superstar for a package that included a 28yo plate bloomer who could easily pumpkin himself back to reality any second now.)

The one team that scares me for getting him is Baltimore. No team has an obvious “this should get him” package, but Baltimore, with Adley Rutschman, Grayson Rodriguez, and Gunnar Henderson, can probably put together the best offer. And really, they have a legit reason to do so right now…m

Don't forget that whatever team acquires Soto will have to pay him 45-50 million over the next 2 seasons in arb salaries. And will have little hope of signing him to an extension.

Only the deepest pockets need apply.

They can sign him now and eschew the arb years, but yes, he is not for the shallow-pocketed…

The 15 year, $440M offer is sickening. Absolutely sickening.

Why did Soto turn down the offer? Is it because he wants to play somewhere else and he is willing to take a lesser contract to play with a team where he'll be happier? Or did he turn it down because he thinks he can get an even bigger contract? I can get on board with the former, not so much with the latter.

I agree. He's not coming to Boston, so Washington is a good place for him.

My guess is the Dodgers, they give up Lux, May, Miller, Busch, Pages, Pepiot, and Bruns, with taking on Corbin's contract. Extending Soto for 15 years at 580 million.
