Boston (33-23) at NY Yankees (35-22) 7:05 pm EDT
BRONX, New York (Ticker) - With weather providing an extra day of rest, Boston Red Sox ace Curt Schilling will look to salvage the finale of what has become a three-game series against the New York Yankees.
Rain postponed Wednesday's affair at Yankee Stadium, perhaps giving the Red Sox an extra day to regroup after dropping the first two games of the series and four consecutive meetings against their arch-rivals overall. No makeup date was announced for the second game between the clubs to be rained out this season.
Schilling (8-2, 3.86 ERA) was roughed up in his last start here, surrendering six runs and eight hits in five innings of a 7-3 loss on May 10. He atoned for that effort 12 days later, allowing just one run and five hits in eight frames of a 9-5 win over New York at Fenway Park.
Since joining Boston prior to the 2004 season, Schilling has gone 5-3 with a 4.56 ERA in 10 regular-season appearances - eight starts - against the Yankees. He also turned in arguably the most memorable performance of his career here in Game Six of the 2004 AL Championship Series, working seven brilliant innings of a 4-2 triumph with sutures stabilizing his ailing right ankle.
Despite the prolonged absences of injured star outfielders Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield, the Yankees have won 11 of their last 14 games to claim a 1 1/2-game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East Division. Captain Derek Jeter also has missed the first two games of this series with an bruised right thumb suffered during Sunday's 11-4 loss at Baltimore.
Jaret Wright (3-3, 4.21) has gone 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA over his last six starts, representing easily his best stretch since signing with the Yankees prior to last season. Embedded in that span was five scoreless innings of a 7-5 win at Boston on May 23.
In his previous nine starts against the Red Sox, Wright was 1-4 with a 7.30 ERA. Johnny Damon has recorded three singles and three walks in the first two games of this series after beginning his Yankees career just 4-for-24 (.167) against the Red Sox, with whom he accumulated 730 hits and 461 runs over the previous four seasons.
