Although I think it was a collosal mistake to let him walk, I think it is clear that they didn't care, and they already had their sights on Coco. Making one offer and not negotiating shows me that they were not serious. I think Damon is on record as having felt disrespected. This was a case of not wanting the guy, not a case of being outbid. Nevertheless it was a big blunder. It is precisely because of this case that the Red Sox will never let it happen again.Originally Posted by jacksonianmarch;214177;
My recollection of that episode is that Contreras wanted to play for the Yankees. There wasn't much they could do about that. I don't remember that they got their final offer on the table.Originally Posted by jacksonianmarch;214177;
This was not a case of the Red Sox and Yankees bidding against each other. I don't think this was even a case of the Yankees coming up with more money. Soriano was substantially cheaper than Manny, so Texas was willing to eat more of ARod's salary. If Texas was willing to let the Red Sox pay AROD only $15 million/year and they would pick up the rest plus Manny's salary, he would have been a Red Sox. The Red Sox were willing to pay more than the Yankees paid. You are you are talking out of your ass on this one.Originally Posted by jacksonianmarch;214177;
Not getting Abreu was IMO a mistake. But was this a case of outbidding? The Yankees gave the Phillies a take it or leave it offer for the full amount, and the Red Sox never got a chance to counter, but I'll not make any excuses. They outmaneuvered the Red Sox on this one. I'll give you this one.Originally Posted by jacksonianmarch;214177;
