Must win game tonight. If they lose tonight, they've lost consecutive series to Tampa Bay and Kansas City, two of the most pathetic teams in baseball. We would also be facing a sweep on Thursday, which is just disgusting to even think about. We have to win these next two games to build momentum for the upcoming 2 months, and what two better pitchers to have on the mound for us than Schill and Beckett? They can't leave KC without 2 wins.

Boston Red Sox (65-46) at Kansas City Royals (39-73), 8:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Boston - Josh Beckett (13-6, 5.00) Kansas City - Mark Redman (7-6, 5.38)

(Sports Network) - Josh Beckett tries for his 14th win of the season this evening when the Boston Red Sox continue their three-game set with the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Beckett, who match teammate Curt Schilling and Detroit's Justin Verlander for the league lead in wins with a victory tonight, is 13-6 on the year but is pitching to a 5.00 earned run average. Beckett enters this contest after a shaky outing on Thursday against Cleveland that saw him surrender seven runs and 11 hits in six innings.

The 26-year-old right-hander also gave up three home runs in the loss to the Indians and has yielded a major-league high 31 long balls this season.

Beckett, though, could get back on track tonight, as he tossed eight scoreless innings in beating the Royals back on July 19 in his only other appearance against them.

Kansas City will counter with Mark Redman, who is 7-6 on the year with a 5.38 ERA. Redman received a no decision in his last start on Friday against the Minnesota Twins, as he allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings of his team's 8-5 loss.

Redman was on the losing end of Beckett's win against the Royals three weeks ago and is a dismal 1-8 lifetime against the Red Sox with a 7.97 ERA in 10 games, nine of which have been starts.

In the opener of this set on Tuesday, Emil Brown went 2-for-4 with a home run and drove in three runs as Kansas City rolled to a 6-4 win. Mike Sweeney, who was activated from the 60-day disabled list prior to the game, went 1-for-3 and scored once as the Royals ended a four-game losing streak.

Kansas City starter Luke Hudson (5-3) gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings to win his fifth straight decision. Ambiorix Burgos notched his 17th save of the season.

Manny Ramirez went 2-for-4 and extended his career-best hitting streak to 23 games for Boston, which has dropped three in a row. David Ortiz belted his major league-leading 41st homer of the season for the Red Sox, who remained two games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Wily Mo Pena added a two-run homer for Boston, which also fell a game back in the AL wild card race to the Chicago White Sox, who defeated the Yankees in extra innings on Tuesday.

Jon Lester (5-2) started for Boston and pitched five innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

Boston swept a three-game set from the Royals earlier in the year and is 16-6 in the series since the start of the 2003 campaign. The Red Sox have also had success in Kansas City, where they have won five of their last nine.

Schilling should be considered a lock for you to win against KC. As long as Beckett doesn't completely self destruct your offense should hold him up regardless.

Yeah, and speaking of that, how about the late (great) series coming up next weekend in Boston? Five games in 4 days at home vs NY. Doubleheader Friday :) , day games Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Five day weekend for me. That may be the season right there.

Anyway, I think the rotation for that series will be:

Lester (game 2 of DH)
Beckett
Schilling

No Hughes. He is a guy who is essentially the jewel of the farm system in front of a "right now" kind of crowd. If the kid comes up and gets pounded against the hated rivals, he will be labelled as a bust after one game. Lets him simmer in the minors and bring him up when necessary next yr.

I think you overuse exclamation marks. But I'm just picky, don't worry. You sound enthused, that's always a plus :D

I think we have no place in the playoffs if we can't win the East. The point is to win. 2nd place in the East is nothing but the first loser. I would be happy if we got into the playoffs through the wild card, but I believe that in the first round, we would have absolutely no shot at getting through the Tigers coming off of the regular season. Let some other team give the Tigers a dose of postseason play before we handle them (assuming an advancement to the ALCS, even though as things look now, I'm not too optimistic about that at all). We needed a starter, and we got nothing done. Our #3 starter is a rookie who's struggling mightily right now, and running out of gas down the stretch. Wells, I can't say anything abuot him until I see him go out and pitch a bit more. Jason Johnson is penciled in for a loss (don't think for a minute you'll ever see another outing like that from him again).

I want the East. If we can't finish ahead of the Yankees, then I don't see how this team will survive in the playoffs.

Welcome back, I see you joined back in January, but I hope you decide to stick around this time.

But, however, you do bring up some very good points. With the way we are playing I would say that it is do or die! It seems like at the beginnig of the year the Sox were having the same problem; clutch hitting and bullpen.

The backend of the bullpen has been great because of Papelbon. Timlin has struggled of late, but I'm not to worried about him. Delcarmen is having a decent season! But Tavarez and Seanz, give me a break! Have they ever been good? If the Sox get on fire I would watch out!!

This has to be the lowest point in years for the Sox. Although they are not as bad as they have looked for the last week, I don't see them going on a winning streak to get them to the playoffs. In 2004 when they went on the winning streak, the starters went deep into games 7th inning and later during the entire streak. The key to that streak was good starting pitching. This team doesn't even have a reliable #2 that can regularly take the game into the late innings. The 3,4, and 5 slots give us 5 innings at best. Thanks for the starter Theo.

I'd love to see that if this team was actually playing half decently.

We're 3 games back in the east and 1.5 out of the wild card because we've free fallen out of first in the east and 3 games back will look like 8 by the end of next weekend at this rate. And that 1.5 will be 5.5.

There's nothing to be optimistic about. Nothing.

I said before that if the Red Sox lost ground during the royals series that they will essentially be done. I know the sox have a ton of games left with the yankees, but you have to see that the yankees are getting tough away games out of the way while the sox are getting gimme games out of the way. The Yankees strength of schedule is decreasing by the day while the sox sos is getting higher. The Sox have played 9 consecutive games against teams that are either in last or second to last place in their divisions. 7 of those games were at home. The sox are 3-6 in those games. Playoff teams dont lose those games.

Its not just the team and the pictching, what about all of the injuries? I know Tek's bat wasnt hot, but his leadership is missed, wakefield, nixon, clement (who cares), and wells..this is never good regardless of what team you are and how bad you suck!

Lets just remember, the sox were up 4 in the loss column 3 weeks ago. They have dropped 8 games in the standings in 3 weeks playing against the dregs of the bigs. This is bad for the sox.

I don't miss Nixon. He should have been benched awhile ago. Pena's power is more appealing than Nixon's lack of it.

Isn't WMP's EqA 4 point higher than Nixon's? I saw that somewhere on this board.

I'll sink to a level beneath the ground if I see the offense/bullpen fuck it up for him like they have been doing this past month & a half

The offense has officially taken the rest of the summer off.Teams do go into hitting slumps, but that's when the pitching on good teams step up. We don't have the horses on the hill. It's just that simple. That's the major reason why the Sox cannot get back into this thing.

Yeah, but don't give up on your team. At least I can tell this is all out of anger. Tomorrow you'll be right in front of your TV watching the team you love, and you know it.

Lets not use the injuries excuse. The team that is cruising right now ahead of the sox had a .325 hitter on the DL for 5 weeks, 2 perennial MVP candidates on the DL since early May, a 40mil starter on the DL the entire yr, the captain banged up, the CFer with a broken foot and a bad groin, a catcher with a bad knee, and a roided 1b with a multitude of small injuries. The sox injuries are very small in comparison to the yankees, the excuse doesnt work.

When it rains, it pours.

How fitting. I just heard my brother playing Tom Petty's song " Free Fallin' " in the other room.

very valid point, but its way too early to quit so soon! There is 49 games left this season and we have no idea what is in store for the rest of the season! Granted it does look very grim for the Sox, and with no blockbuster deal made before the trade deadline it looks even bleeker, but it is still way too early. The sun has to shine on the dog's ass every so often!!

The sun set 3 weeks ago, and it isn't coming back up. Not until someone lights a fire under this team's ass.
